This book is part of a set of books which offers advanced students successive characterization tool phases, the study of all types of phase (liquid, gas and solid, pure or multi-component), process engineering, chemical and electrochemical equilibria, and the properties of surfaces and phases of small sizes. Macroscopic and microscopic models are in turn covered with a constant correlation between the two scales. Particular attention has been given to the rigor of mathematical developments. This volume, the final of the Chemical Thermodynamics Set, offers an in-depth examination of chemical thermodynamics. The author uses systems of liquids, vapors, solids and mixtures of these in thermodynamic approaches to determine the influence of the temperature and pressure on the surface tension and its consequences on specific heat capacities and latent heats. Electro-capillary phenomena, the thermodynamics of cylindrical capillary and small volume-phases are also discussed, along with a thermodynamic study of the phenomenon of nucleation of a condensed phase and the properties of thin liquid films. The final chapters discuss the phenomena of physical adsorption and chemical adsorption of gases by solid surfaces. In an Appendix, applications of physical adsorption for the determination of the specific areas of solids and their porosity are given.

The book is concerned with the main assumptions of the theory of Gibbs capillarity theory and fundamental thermodynamic equations, derived by the method of the finite thickness layer. Special attention is given to applied aspects of the thermodynamic theory of surface phenomena. Methods for calculating adsorption in multicomponent solutions are examined in detail. Systems of equations for calculating adsorption in real multicomponent systems from the concentration dependence of surface tension are derived for the first time. Experimental data on surface tension and density in binary and multicomponent systems are presented. Analysis of the results is used to develop methods for predicting the surface properties of multicomponent systems from the data on the properties of binary melts.

While these materials can sometimes be analyzed in terms of microscopic mixtures, it is often conceptually simpler to regard them as dispersions and to focus on the properties of the internal interfaces found in these systems. The basic physics centers on the properties of quasi-two-dimensional systems embedded in the three-dimensional world, thus exhibiting phenomena which do not exist in bulk materials.

If a Writer would know how to behave himself with relation to Posterity; let him consider in old Books, what he finds, that he is glad to know; and what Omissions he most laments. Jonathan Swift This book emerges from a long story of teaching. I taught chemical engineering thermodynamics for about ten years at the University of Naples in the 1960s, and I still remember the awkwardness that I felt about any textbook I chose to consider-all of them seemed to be vague at best, and the standard of logical rigor seemed immensely inferior to what I could find in books on such other of the students in my first class subjects as calculus and fluid mechanics. One (who is now Prof. F. Gioia of the University of Naples) once asked me a question which I have used here as Example 4. 2-more than 20 years have gone by, and I am still waiting for a more intelligent question from one of my students. At the time, that question compelled me to answer in a way I didn't like, namely "I'll think about it, and I hope I'll have the answer by the next time we meet. " I didn't have it that soon, though I did manage to have it before the end of the course.

Physicochemical Hydrodynamics Of Capillary Systems written by V V Krotov and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-06-01 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This is the first book on physicochemical hydrodynamics that is devoted to capillary systems (surface layers, drops, films, jets, etc.) whose flow is greatly influenced by surface phenomena. Two- and three-dimensional hydrodynamics and rheology are formulated, as well as the kinetics and dynamics of surfactant adsorption in capillary systems. A new approach is elaborated for describing the most complicated capillary systems, like foams and polyhedral emulsions, as continuous media. The stability of disperse structures and the influence of gravity are also analysed. Although the book is purely theoretical, many consequences of practical importance are obtained. It will be of interest to university lecturers and postgraduates in colloid and surface science, as well as researchers and engineers dealing with capillary systems.

This second edition of the excellent reference work has been supplemented by such up-to-date topics as depletion forces, surface modification by plasma polymerization, principles of lithography, or inverse gas chromatography, while the number and variety of exercises has been increased. The text reflects the many facets of this discipline by linking physical fundamentals, especially those taken from thermodynamics, with application-specific topics. Similarly, the theory behind important concepts is backed by clearly explained by scientific-engineering aspects as well as a wide range of high-end applications from microelectronics and biotechnology. Written to be understood intuitively by those with a general comprehension of the topic, and not burdened by details, this book is aimed at advanced students (and their teachers) in physics, chemistry and material sciences, as well as engineers and natural scientists requiring background knowledge in surface and interface science.
