Da decenni le aree interne italiane sono coinvolte in intensi processi di spopolamento, di rarefazione dei servizi pubblici essenziali, di impoverimento produttivo. Si tratta di tendenze ormai croniche e alquanto diffuse, che il lavoro di analisi e di proposta dell’Associazione Riabitare l’Italia ha contribuito a riportare al centro del dibattito pubblico. Nonostante il declino demografico, economico e di attenzione, le aree interne continuano ad essere luoghi vivi, dove quotidianamente si riproducono beni pubblici fondamentali per l’intero paese e dove milioni di cittadini hanno scelto di vivere e di investire le loro capacità. L’abbandono umano non è l’unica cifra di queste terre; molti decidono consapevolmente di restare; altri, seppure in misura limitata, di ritornare; e altri ancora di provare a sperimentare in questi luoghi «lontani» nuovi stili di vita, più «lenti» e connessi con la natura. La voglia di radicamento è un aspetto inedito e ancora poco esplorato, che merita di essere messo in luce perché rivela una realtà fatta di giovani che non solo non hanno lasciato i loro paesi, ma che hanno scelto di restare – o di tornare – in modo attivo. Le storie raccontate in questo libro, raccolte attraverso un’ampia ricerca quanti- qualitativa condotta su un campione di oltre tremila giovani residenti nelle aree interne dell’intera penisola, fanno emergere il desiderio di «restanza», evidenziando tanto le opportunità quanto le difficoltà che la scelta di non partire comporta. La ricerca, coordinata da Andrea Membretti e Sabrina Lucatelli, restituisce una lettura articolata del fenomeno, facendo emergere sia i fattori che minacciano le possibilità effettive dei giovani di vivere e lavorare nei propri territori di origine sia le opportunità legate a una vera e propria «capacità di restare», che richiede di essere coltivata e accompagnata da politiche in grado di rispondere alle esigenze e alle aspirazioni di chi resta.

Occuparsi di urbanistica è occuparsi dei processi di antropizzazione, ovvero di eventi non inevitabili o necessari ma che dipendono da scelte. Perdita di senso, di riferimenti sociali e culturali incombono e sembrano essere divenuti il prezzo da pagare per un indecifrabile percorso dettato negli ultimi decenni dall'economia che ha preso il sopravvento sulla politica, cioè l'arte di gestire la polis: più i territori sono deboli, o sono divenuti tali, più soggiacciono a queste logiche. Costruendo e realizzando il Workshop di Tropea si è iniziato a sperimentare sul campo come le riflessioni critiche elaborate possano aiutare a ricostruire un senso dello spazio e, contemporaneamente, l'abitante a divenire cum-cives. Questo libro continua il percorso dedicato all'identificazione delle nuove fenomenologie legate al formarsi della città globale e quindi al tema della ricerca di una possibile, auspicabile, identità individuale e collettiva, sostenibile sia riguardo le risorse naturali che socialmente. Se ciò lo si riuscirà a realizzare in territori oggi cosí problematici, resi ancor più distanti da opzioni economiche non troppo lontane, allora la parola speranza è lecita per l'urbanistica moderna e quindi per il bene pubblico, anzi, per il bene comune primo che è la città.
