Climate change remains a global challenge due to the livelihood threat it poses particularly to the marginalized or vulnerable groups in society. Though developing countries contribute the least to the cause of climate change, they remain the most vulnerable to its effects. This vulnerability is due to the over-reliance of the population on rain-fed agriculture as the main livelihood source. These, mainly smallholder farmers, lack institutional, technological, infrastructural, and economic capabilities to adapt to climate change. In addition to this, there are wide disparities in the allocation of key sustainable livelihood assets (e.g., land, livestock, farm equipment, etc.) among men, women, and youth. For instance, women often have limited access to land, financial services, social capital, technology, labour, education, and other opportunities mainly due to traditional/cultural sex divisions within the domestic realm. Moreover, the majority of the resource-poor youth are employed in the agricultural sector, rendering them more vulnerable to climate uncertainties. The impact of climate change on these groups (men, women, youth, and smallholders) is expected to be different. Studies that fail to acknowledge these differences and focus only on geographical location could be misleading. Recent climate change scenarios indicate substantial reductions in the yield of staple foods linked to drought, high temperature, and rainfall variability with a projected overall decline in revenue from agriculture. These projected negative impacts would directly influence food security and render millions of households undernourished. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, between 720 and 828 million people across the globe are already experiencing chronic hunger. Additionally, about 161 million children below five years of age are stunted.

The complex of ecological problems in Central Asia, especially in Uzbekistan, is linked to rapid ongoing demographic and economic processes. However, geographical location has its own peculiarity. Aridity of the climate in Uzbekistan makes water resources as main limiting factor for sustainable economic development (Chub et al., 1998; RECCA, 2011). Annual precipitation, ranging from 80-200 mm in plain to 300-400 mm in foothills and 600-800 mm in mountain rangelands (Chub, 2007), is considerably lower than the evaporation demand of atmosphere (FAO IPTRID et al., 2004). Thus, agriculture, accounting about 90% withdrawal of total available water resources in Uzbekistan, is impossible without irrigation (Qadir et al., 2009). Moreover, agricultural production is highly vulnerable to climate change (Lioubimtseva & Henebry, 2009). High fluctuation of precipitation and temperature increase may influence land use in irrigated lands, create difficulties in water management at regional and local scales, and increase competition of scarce water resources among water users in various sectors.

A considerable change in climate at a global level will impact the vegetable cultivation and agriculture as a whole; subsequently affecting the world's food supply. Climate change per se is not necessarily harmful; the problems arise from extreme events that are difficult to predict (erratic rainfall patterns and unpredictable high and low temperatures), and consequently reduce crop productivity. Vegetables are in general more succulent (have 90% water) and are more sensitive to climatic vagaries. Sudden changes in temperature coupled with irregular precipitation at any phase of crop growth can affect the normal growth, flowering, pollination, fruit setting, fruit development and fruit ripening can decrease the yield. The irregular precipitation can also affect the soil salinity and is a major challenge in many vegetable growing areas. To mitigate the harmful impact of climatic change there is a urgent need to develop adequate adaptation strategies for adverse effect of climate change and the preference should be given on development of heat, cold, drought, flood and salinity stress tolerant genotypes along with climate proofing through conventional and non-conventional breeding techniques. Available evidence shows that there is a high probability of increase in the frequency and intensity of climate related natural hazards due to climate change and hence increases the potential threat due to climate change related natural disasters in the world. This book (Volume- I) will be basically useful for the researchers and postgraduate students with current challenges and mitigation strategies for increasing vegetable production under a changing climate.
