Based on a research project funded by the Army Research Institute, Foreign Language Learning reports original empirical and theoretical research on foreign language acquisition and makes recommendations about applications to foreign language instruction. The ultimate goal of this project was to identify a set of psychological principles that can provide the foundation for--or at least, argumentation for--a foreign language training course. This book reviews the various studies of which the project is comprised. It begins with an overview chapter outlining the scope of the project and summarizing some of the experiments that were conducted in the laboratory. In each of the following chapters, the contributors report on previously unpublished research on selected specific psycholinguistic training principles; vocabulary and concept acquisition; language comprehension; reading processes; and bilingualism. The final chapter--prepared by a prominent expert on second language training--provides an overview and evaluation of the contribution of the research described in earlier chapters to the goal of improving instructional methods in foreign language learning. Sandwiched between the introductory and final chapters are four major sections: * Vocabulary and Concept Acquisition, which discusses the effect of first-language phonological configuration on lexical acquisition in a second language, contextual inference effects in foreign language vocabulary acquisition and retention, mediated processes in foreign language vocabulary acquisition and retention, and the status of the count-mass distinction in a mental grammar; * Language Comprehension, which addresses voice communication between air traffic controllers and pilots who are nonnative speakers of English, cognitive strategies in discourse processing, and the effects of context and word order in Maasai sentence production and comprehension; * Reading Processes, which discusses the enhancement of text comprehension through highlighting, the effect of alphabet and fluency on unitization processes in reading, and reading proficiency of bilinguals in their first and second languages; and * Bilingualism, which addresses Stroop interference effects in bilinguals between similar and dissimilar languages, the individual differences in second language proficiency, and the hierarchical model of bilingual representation.

The purpose of this book is to conceptualise the research on dictionary use within a more general overview of language learning. It brings together some of the findings of studies on dictionary users and uses and shows how research into dictionary use can contribute to the improvement of dictionary design and the clarification of issues in language learning. The book also provides reports on a series of empirical studies on dictionary use in decoding activities (reading comprehension and L2/L1 translation) , which will shed some light on the nature of the issues discussed throughout the book. The book falls into two parts. Part I, »Research on Dictionary Use - State of the Art« is, as its title suggests, a summary of previous studies to tease out relevant issues in each area of inquiry. Part 2, »Empirical Studies« reports on a series of studies the author has conducted in the past 15 years. The first three studies (Chapter 5, 6, and 7) investigate dictionary use in the broader context of language learning. The next four studies (Chapter 8, 9, 10 and 11) report on a series of controlled experiments on the relationship between the macro- and microstructure of the dictionary and reference skills. Finally, the last two chapters (Chapter 12 and 13) report the use of learner language data for a better lexicographical output.

Working and interacting in foreign languages is widespread. While the relationship between language and behavior has been discussed for many years, empirical evidence for behavioral effects of foreign language use is surprisingly scarce. Stefan Nothelfer has conducted a series of laboratory studies to investigate and disentangle effects of language and culture on creativity and cooperation, important behavioral foundations of innovation. He draws insights from a large cross-country dataset with pairings between three languages, using a custom-built mobile laboratory. The author’s findings challenge theories of linguistic relativity, foreign language effects, and cultural accommodation, and enrich the empirical basis for fundamental research on language and behavior.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Language learning software has been available on the market for a couple of years. So far the most common form of delivering the product is a CD-Rom. The Internet offers not only the possibility to deliver this product in an immaterial way, but also to add new features to it. The goal of the thesis is to find out, which additional features an online offered language learning software must possess, to satisfy the needs of the customer. This task is part of the so called new product development process. It is a very complex process and refers to all departments of a company, even though, for a long time it has been considered to be only the job of the R & D department. But to solve the above mentioned task, the technical component, of new product development is not important. For this piece of work only the point of view of the marketing department is important, as it is their duty to observe the market expectations. Therefore this thesis only covers the first part of new product development, the opportunity identification, and partly the design. Firstly the different environments were studied and secondary data were collected. A main part of the secondary data were delivered by a European Union study from the year 2000. This research was focused on the knowledge and habits of EU inhabitants regarding foreign languages. After the examination of the available secondary data, the required primary data were collected, to find out how the single features satisfy the requirements of the target group. Other secondary data were delivered by pedagogical departments of universities. They researched and evaluated, from the pedagogical point of view, possible online features like e-mail, newsgroups and chats, videoconferences, downloadable video / audio files and up to date articles. This thesis objective is to find out, how these possible features meet the requirements of the customer, or to be more precise of the target group. Therefore the target group had to be defined. Defined by profession, the target group consist of: Students in higher education and universities, managers and White Collar Workers. Thanks to the secondary data, the needs of the target group are known. To obtain the required primary data, on how the possible product features satisfy the market needs, a questionnaire was designed. The interviews took place in two countries and at international courses in order to be able to consider domestic differences. The [...]
