This much-needed guide shows how to implement positive behavior support (PBS) strategies in secondary settings, using a three-tiered approach. The authors adapt the core ideas of PBS to the developmental context of adolescence and the organizational structures of middle schools and junior and senior high schools. With an emphasis on data-based decision making, the book provides ideas and examples for meeting the behavioral needs of all students, from those with emerging concerns to those with ongoing, chronic problems. It takes practitioners step by step through planning, implementing, evaluating, and sustaining schoolwide, small-group, and individual interventions. In a convenient large-size format, the book includes useful reproducible forms. This book is in The Guilford Practical Intervention in the Schools Series, edited by Sandra M. Chafouleas.

First published in 1981. The inadequacy of traditional ‘solutions’ is nowhere more apparent than in the area of problem behaviour in secondary schools. Neither tough-minded punishment nor tender-minded treatment seems to be the answer. But the practical failure is also a theoretical one, since it misconstrues the determinants of behaviour. Taking a system perspective, Bill Gillham argues in his introductory chapter that ‘our conception of the individual has been too narrow’, so that both treatment and punishment approaches have missed out important elements in an adequate psychology of individuals: the roles they fill, the tasks they perform, the people they encounter – and the institutional settings where all these are experienced. Drawing together a wide range of theory, evidence and practice, the present book makes out a case for a school-centred, interactionist, approach to dealing with problem behaviour.

Backround and aim: Sleep problems such as poor quality or inadequate sleep can be an important factor in the development of behavioral problems in children. The resulting behavioral problems can also affect the child's daily life in a negative way. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between sleep quality and emotional-behavioral problems in secondary school students.Method: This correlational study was conducted between February and May 2018 with 530 students in six secondary schools selected by stratified clustering sampling method in Sakarya. In both scales, the score increasing is considered to be negative. Descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney U test and correlation analysis were used for statistical evaluation. Results: The mean age of the students was 12.07 u00b1 1.37 years. The mean score of the PSQI was 4.34 u00b1 2.54 (min=0, max=16) and the mean score of the SDQ was 11.91 u00b1 5.56 (min=2, max=31). It was found that, 41.1% of the students have bad sleep quality and 21.1% of them were in the abnormal norms in terms of emotional and behavioral problems. A positive correlation was found between the PSQI and the SDQ (r=.53, p=.000). The hyperactivity-inattention, conduct problems, emotional symptoms and peer problems subscales' scores of SDQ were significantly higher in students with poor sleep quality than those with good sleep quality (p

There are many serious social, and economic problems that impact student s’ behavior. Because countless minorities are at risk of behavior problems caused by poverty, racism, discrimination, and other negative conditions, special attention needs to be given to the development of programs and strategies to prevent behavioral problems. Developmental guidance programs in elementary schools that attend to the needs of all children are effective ways to prevent problems before they begin. Experts on poverty and inequality see a role for preschool intervention to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds have a better chance at success when they start elementary and secondary schools. Several models have been discussed such as reinforcing and rewarding behaviors, and consequences and punishment. In order to minimize disruptive behaviors, effective classroom management is the heart of preventing discipline problems. Teachers have put in place beginning the first day of school, their rules, procedures, and expectation in order to reduce problems in the classroom. A positive classroom climate is also needed to improve student learning and encourage good behavior.
