Both domain-general (e.g., working memory, executive functions) and domain-specific (e.g., number processing, phonological processing) cognitive factors have been found to predict learning in different age groups. Likewise, research has shown that various affective factors, such as different emotions (e.g., anxiety), self-concept, and interest, need to be considered when investigating individual differences in learning. However, few studies have investigated both cognitive and affective factors simultaneously in relation to learning. In particular, there is a lack of studies investigating the interplay (i.e., moderation and mediation) between cognitive and affective factors on learning. The goal of this Research Topic is to deepen our knowledge on the relations between learning and both cognitive and affective factors in different age groups. We aim to provide a broad scope of emerging areas in research on cognitive and affective factors, especially related to academic learning (e.g., mathematics, reading, and other school subjects). Studies focusing simultaneously looking at the interplay of these constructs, as well as longitudinally, are of great interest. Further, we are interested in innovative study designs and recent advances in methodology in this field. To promote quality education for all and equity in education, cognitive and affective factors related to aspects of learning ranging from pre-school to tertiary provision, and inclusion of individuals with special educational needs, are of interest.

Structured in this way, it enables TESOL teacher educators and practitioners to better understand how language learners process and retain new information, improving their overall ability to learn and remember. In addition to supporting TESOL teacher educators and practitioners in promoting effective language learning, this volume explains individual differences among language learners and the importance of developing learners’ emotional, social, and behavioural skills while addressing learning difficulties, disorders, disabilities, and challenging behaviours whenever required. The individual chapters are written in an accessible style to enable readers to explore various psychological concepts in their pedagogical practice by engaging in reflective teaching through action research. This volume is a vital resource for pre- and in-service language teachers and will encourage language teacher educators to reassess their existing practices. The SAGE Encyclopedia of Educational Technology examines information on leveraging the power of technology to support teaching and learning. While using innovative technology to educate individuals is certainly not a new topic, how it is approached, adapted, and used toward the services of achieving real gains in student performance is extremely pertinent. This two-volume encyclopedia explores such issues, focusing on core topics and issues that will retain relevance in the face of perpetually evolving devices, services, and specific techniques. As technology evolves and becomes even more low-cost, easy-to-use, and more accessible, the education sector will evolve alongside it. For instance, issues surrounding reasoning behind how one study has shown students retain information better in traditional print formats are a topic explored within the pages of this new encyclopedia. Features: A collection of 300-350 entries are organized in A-to-Z fashion in 2 volumes available in a choice of print or electronic formats. Entries, authored by key figures in the field, conclude with cross references and further readings. A detailed index, the Reader’s Guide themes, and cross references combine for search-and-browse in the electronic version. This reference encyclopedia is a reliable and precise source on educational technology and a must-have reference for all academic libraries.

The Second Language Learning Processes of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties is the only recent book available to offer a detailed and in-depth discussion of the second language learning processes of students with specific learning difficulties (SpLDs). It summarizes research advances in the fields of cognitive and educational psychology and integrates them with recent studies in the area of second language acquisition (SLA). Thus the book is relevant not only to readers who are particularly interested in the role of specific learning difficulties in learning additional languages, but also to those who would like to understand how individual differences in cognitive functioning influence SLA. The book focuses on four important areas that are particularly relevant for language learners with SpLDs: the processes of SLA in general and the development of reading skills in particular, the effectiveness of pedagogical programs, the assessment of the language competence of students with SpLDs and identifying SpLDs in another language. The book also views learners with SpLDs in their social and educational contexts and elaborates how the barriers in these contexts can affect their language learning processes. This is an excellent resource for language teachers, students, and researchers in the areas of second language acquisition and applied linguistics.

This little book aims to clarify and give a synoptic description of both the notions of â ~Metacognitionâ (TM) and â ~Theory of Mindâ (TM), as well as a short comparison of these two â ~hotâ (TM) scientific topics. After giving the theoretical framework of the concept of â ~Metacognitionâ (TM), it describes a number of practical suggestions of how educators of all levels can enhance their studentsâ (TM) metacognitive abilities in practice. Then it analyzes all the basic aspects of the concept of â ~Theory of Mindâ (TM) and its relation to Language. Finally, it tries to combine the two theoretical concepts, i.e. â ~Metacognitionâ (TM) and â ~Theory of Mindâ (TM), by making some helpful clarifications and identifying their major similarities, differences and convergences. In this way, the author hopes strongly to contribute to the resume of the Literature Review in a concise and handy volume, and wishes to help all the interesting parts, scholars and teachers, to do their own insights and improvements (theoretical and practical) in these crucial areas.

Cultural Validity In Assessment written by María del Rosario Basterra and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04-12 with Education categories.

What is assessment and how is it a cultural practice? How does failure to account for linguistic and cultural variation among students jeopardize assessment validity? What is required to achieve cultural validity in assessment? This resource for practicing and prospective teachers – as well as others concerned with fair and valid assessment – provides a thorough grounding in relevant theory, research, and practice. The book lays out criteria for culturally valid assessment and recommends specific strategies that teachers can use to design and implement culturally valid classroom assessments. Assessment plays a powerful role in the process of education in the US and has a disproportionately negative impact on students who do not come from mainstream, middle-class backgrounds. Given the significance of testing in education today, cultural validity in assessment is an urgent issue facing educators. This book is essential reading for addressing this important, relevant topic.
