This book is a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of Community-Based Art Education (CBAE). CBAE encourages learners to make connections between their art education in a classroom setting and its application in the community beyond school, with demonstrable examples of how the arts impact responsible citizenship. Written by and for visual art educators, this resource offers guidance on how to thoughtfully and successfully execute CBAE in the pre-K–12 classroom and with adult learners, taking a broad view towards intergenerational art learning. Chapters include vignettes, exemplars of practice, curriculum examples that incorporate the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards, and research frameworks for developing, implementing, and assessing CBAE projects. “This is the book I have been waiting for—carefully researched, thought-provoking, and inspiring.” —Lily Yeh, Barefoot Artists Inc. “A practical guide for community-based art education that is theoretically grounded in social justice. Insightful suggestions for working with communities, planning, creating transformative learning, and evaluating outcomes are based in the authors’ deep experience. This book is a timely and welcome volume that will be indispensable to individuals and community organizations working in the arts for positive change.” —Elizabeth Garber, professor emeritus, University of Arizona

This edited collection offers global perspectives on the transverse, boundary-blurring possibilities of community arts education. Invoking ‘transversality’ as an overarching theoretical framework and a methodological structure, 55 contributors – community professionals, scholars, artists, educators and activists from sixteen countries – offer studies and practical cases exploring the complexities of community arts education at all levels. Such complexities include challenges created by globalizing phenomena such as the COVID-19 pandemic; ongoing efforts to achieve justice for Indigenous peoples; continuing movement of immigrants and refugees; growing recognition of issues related to equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace; and the increasing impact of grassroot movements and organizations. Chapters are grouped into four thematic clusters – Connections, Practices, Spaces and Relations – that map these and other intersecting assemblages of transversality. Thinking transversally about community art education not only shifts our understanding of knowledge from a passive construct to an active component of social life but redefines art education as a distinctive practice emerging from the complex relationships that form community.

Compelling case studies of groups in Panama, Nicaragua, Mexico, the United States, and Canada using the arts for education, community development, and social movement building. This compelling collection of inspiring case studies from community arts projects in five countries will inform and inspire students, artists, and activists. ¡VIVA! is the product of a five-year transnational research project that integrates place, politics, passion, and praxis. Framed by postcolonial theories of decolonization, the pedagogy of the oppressed articulated by Brazilian educator Paulo Freire, and the burgeoning field of community arts, this collection not only analyzes the dynamic integration of the critical and the creative in social justice movements, it embodies such a praxis. Learn from Central America: Kuna children’s art workshops, a community television station in Nicaragua, a cultural marketplace in Guadalajara, Mexico, community mural production in Chiapas; and from North America: arts education in Los Angeles inner-city schools, theater probing ancestral memory, community plays with over one hundred participants, and training programs for young artists in Canada. These practices offer critical hope for movements hungry for new ways of knowing and expressing histories, identities, and aspirations, as well as mobilizing communities for social transformation. Beautifully illustrated with more than one hundred color photographs, the book also includes a DVD with videos that bring the projects to life. “¡Viva! is a powerful read, raising the bar on what we need to know and where we can grow. It is heartening to sense that we are part of a rising stream on its way to becoming a river. This book will become a touchstone in a growing international network of allies, so that more untold stories and projects can be heard and become part of a building momentum.” — Beverly Naidus, author of Arts for Change: Teaching Outside the Frame

The Los Angeles Unified School District in 1999 approved a ten-year program to implement a substantive, sequential curriculum in arts education. A central goal of the plan calls for schools to build partnerships with the Los Angeles arts community to provide educational programming, beginning with elementary schools in the Arts Prototype Schools (APS) program. This study examined the range of partnerships in operation and identified partnership challenges and facilitators through interviews with APS principals and teachers, local district arts advisors, and directors of arts organizations.

This anthology looks at arts partnerships which integrate community arts and cultural resources with schools. It also explores the structural, operational, and philosophical adaptations which take place within arts organizations and schools when they become engaged in the process of developing a healthy, responsive relationship. Finally, it examines the struggle to produce and sustain the changes that can occur in teaching and learning for children when artists, professional art educators and classroom teachers pool their expertise to integrated arts instruction into the basic curriculum. Ideas contributed through interviews with artists, art educators and arts administrators are incorporated in text of 8, subdivided chapters: (1) "Introduction: From Enrichment to Engagement"; (2) "What Schools are for and the Case for the Arts in General Education"; (3) "School Reform and the Arts"; (4) "Arts Partnership as a Strategy for Institutional Change"; (5) "Arts Partnerships in the Classroom"; (6) "Determining Program and Instructional Effectiveness: Research, Evaluation, Assessment and Standards"; (7) "Catalysts for Community Activism and Commitment: Arts Agencies Foundations and International Associations"; and (8) "Conclusion: The Oxymoronic Quest for Durable Change". The work concludes with Appendices, a Bibliography, and an Index. (MM)
