La Psicología del Aprendizaje Humano ha vivido desde sus orígenes una profunda escisión tanto teórica como en sus ámbitos de intervención. Por un lado ha habido una tradición cercana al conductismo que ha entendido el aprendizaje como un proceso de detección de regularidades en el ambiente por medio de procesos asociativos y que por tanto ha diseñado la intervención psicológica mediante técnicas para modificar los sucesos a los que las personas se enfrentan así como las respuestas asociadas a dichos sucesos. Pero desde otra perspectiva, más cercana al constructivismo, se ha concebido el aprendizaje en términos de los procesos cognitivos que median en el significado que las personas atribuyen a esos sucesos y a esas conductas, de forma que intervenir es cambiar cómo las personas se representan el mundo y su propia identidad en él. Este libro se propone reconciliar ambas tradiciones en el marco de los recientes desarrollos en psicología cognitiva, que diferencian entre procesos implícitos, de carácter no consciente y asociativo, y procesos explícitos, que implican una construcción consciente de significados y que darían cuenta de las formas de aprender más complejas, propias de nuestra especie, las que nos diferencian del resto de los organismos, como la adquisición de conocimiento y el cambio personal. Para ello se propone la integración de ambas formas de aprender en un modelo complejo del Aprendizaje Humano que adopta la forma de una jerarquía estratificada, de modo que el aprendizaje más primario, de carácter implícito y asociativo, restringiría las formas más complejas del aprendizaje explícito y constructivo, pero estas a su vez reconstruirían los resultados del aprendizaje implícito. Tras exponer de modo detallado ambos tipos de aprendizaje y cómo dan cuenta del Aprendizaje Humano en diferentes dominios (aprendizaje social, personal, escolar, formación de expertos, etc.

In 1963 an initial attempt was made in my The Psychology of Meaningful Verbal Learning to present a cognitive theory of meaningful as opposed to rote verbal learning. It was based on the proposition that the acquisition and retention of knowl edge (particularly of verbal knowledge as, for example, in school, or subject-matter learning) is the product of an active, integrative, interactional process between instructional material (subject matter) and relevant ideas in the leamer's cognitive structure to which the new ideas are relatable in particular ways. This book is a full-scale revision of my 1963 monograph, The Psychology of Meaningful Verbal Learning, in the sense that it addresses the major aforementioned and hitherto unmet goals by providing for an expansion, clarification, differentiation, and sharper focusing of the principal psychological variables and processes involved in meaningful learning and retention, i.e., for their interrelationships and interactions leading to the generation of new meanings in the individual learner. The preparation of this new monograph was largely necessitated by the virtual collapse of the neobe havioristic theoretical orientation to learning during the previous forty years; and by the meteoric rise in the seventies and beyond of constructivist approaches to learning theory.
