The study was on the performance of the decision support system for agrotechnology transfer (DSSAT) and the soil water atmosphere plant (SWAP) under an acid sulphate soil. The comparison of these models was done as a prerequisite to the selection of an appropriate model, which is capable of simulating water management scenarios, water balance and crop growth, to be coupled with an adaptive optimization algorithm that can be used to explore water management options.

This work presents models that characterize the relationships between quantity and quality of irrigation water application, and agricultural production and the environment. A comprehensive modeling approach addressing both the benefits of irrigation and the potential negative effects is introduced. Physical-biological concepts are combined with economic and engineering principles to demonstrate the usefulness of the model for analyzing various water management and policy issues. Decision makers on all levels should find the modeling approach interesting and useful in the management issues from the farm to national levels.

This publication comes with computer software and presents a comprehensive simulation model designed to predict the hydrologic response, including potential for surface and groundwater contamination, of alternative crop-management systems. It simulates crop development and the movement of water, nutrients and pesticides over and through the root zone for a representative unit area of an agricultural field over multiple years. The model allows simulation of a wide spectrum of management practices and scenarios with special features such as the rapid transport of surface-applied chemicals through macropores to deeper depths and the preferential transport of chemicals within the soil matrix via mobile-immobile zones. The transfer of surface-applied chemicals (pesticides in particular) to runoff water is also an important component.

The increasing risk of severe droughts and water shortages emphasizes the need for an integrated approach to drought mitigation. However, effective tools for the implementation of such an approach have not been available till now. This book contributes to an improved preparedness for drought in water supply systems, providing tools useful for a better decision making process in drought management. It presents methods and software features of a Decision Support System (DSS) developed within a European research project and consists of three main parts. The first part deals with the advanced techniques for hydrological drought identification and monitoring; the second analyses the successful use of climate-crop-soil models in defining deficit irrigation strategies; the third provides tools for improving the operation of irrigation supply reservoirs.

Saline water adversely affects crop production due to mismanagement of its use for irrigation. The yield of crops irrigated with saline water can be enhanced substantially, if an additional source of good quality water is available for use at critical times during the season. An alternative approach is to use the good quality water in blending mode. In the present book, Salt-Water-Atmosphere-Plant (SWAP) model used for its evaluation and scenario building capability in monsoon climatic conditions having the problems of saline groundwater. The contents of this book include: introduction that highlight use of saline water with different modes of irrigation, review of global and Indian use of saline water under the heads: Direct or blended use of saline water and its effects on soil salinity and crop yield, cyclic mode use of fresh and saline water, use of saline water in aquaculture, use of models for water management, and use of SWAP model for water management. Authors believe that the information contained in this book would facilitate the readers to have a fair view of proper use of saline water and add to the knowledge of conjunctive use of water with the help of SWAP model.

The Agricultural Field Scale Irrigation Requirements Simulation (AFSIRS) model was developed for Florida's water management districts by the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) to provide a method to determine allocations for consumptive use permitting. The model estimates irrigation requirements for Florida crops, soils, irrigation systems and climate conditions. Since the model was originally developed, additional tasks were identified. This report documents the results of the additional tasks.

Irrigation is becoming an activity of precision, where combining information collected from various sources is necessary to optimally manage resources. New management strategies, such as big data techniques, sensors, artificial intelligence, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), and new technologies in general, are becoming more relevant every day. As such, modeling techniques, both at the water distribution network and the farm levels, will be essential to gather information from various sources and offer useful recommendations for decision-making processes. In this book, 10 high quality papers were selected that cover a wide range of issues that are relevant to the different aspects related to irrigation management: water source and distribution network, plot irrigation systems, and crop water management.
