Die in ihrer Geschichte verhandelten Begriffe sind schwer fassbar, schwer definierbar und verursachen nicht nur bei Studierenden der Sozialpädagogik „Zweifel und Selbstzweifel“, was es in diesem Zusammenhang mit der Sozialpädagogik überhaupt auf sich habe und „was man über sie wissen müsse“. Begriffe wie beispielsweise Hilfe und Fürsorge, Liebe und Vertrauen sind nicht nur in historischer Dimension eigentümlich schillernd am Firmament humanistischer Wissenschaft und beruflicher Praxis. Sie stehen auch im Jetzt für soziale Interaktionen im Berufsfeld personenbezogener sozialer Dienstleistungen. Sie sind heute noch aktuell zu verhandelnde, in Weiterentwicklung empirisch und theoriegeleitet zu erforschende Begrifflichkeiten der Sozialpädagogik und spielen in der Ausgestaltung lebensweltlicher Nähe und Distanz zu den Adressaten eine Rolle. Auch wenn die Begriffe in ihrer semantischen Explizitheit in der aktuellen Diskussion nicht mehr auftauchen, sind sie doch fester Bestandteil. Mit Detlef Gaus und Reinhard Uhle sind persönliche Wertschätzung, Liebe und Anerkennung von Erzieherinnen und Erziehern, Lehrerinnen und Lehrern durch Heranwachsende Voraussetzungen dafür, dass Heranwachsende sich auf Erziehungsambitionen und Lehrintentionen einlassen. Demnach habe sich Trotz semantischer Veränderungen seit 1800 die Problemstellung von Pädagogik hinsichtlich des Umgangs mit der Frage, wie Erziehung und Unterrichtung die Mitwirkung von Adressaten bewirken kann, nicht verändert. Auch im didaktischen Diskurs der Sozialpädagogik ist die Frage nach der Besonderheit der personalen Dimension der sozialpädagogischen Profession noch nicht zu Ende verhandelt. Es liegt auf der Hand, dass die didaktische Diskussion in der Sozialpädagogik die Frage nach der Ausgestaltung von Beziehungen zwischen Subjekten in mehrfacher Weise zu beantworten hat. „Es geht um eine integrale Entwicklung der Persönlichkeit“. „Denken, Fühlen und Handeln bilden eine Einheit, die den Erziehungsprozess in dieser Qualität erst konstituiert und nicht ohne die den Handlungsprozess mitstrukturierende Personen gedacht werden kann“.

This volume presents a mix of translations of classical and modern papers from the German Didaktik tradition, newly prepared essays by German scholars and practitioners writing from within the tradition, and interpretive essays by U.S. scholars. It brings this tradition, which virtually dominated German curricular thought and teacher education until the 1960s when American curriculum theory entered Germany--and which is now experiencing a renaissance--to the English-speaking world, where it has been essentially unknown. The intent is to capture in one volume the core (at least) of the tradition of Didaktik and to communicate its potential relevance to English-language curricularists and teacher educators. It introduces a theoretical tradition which, although very different in almost every respect from those we know, offers a set of approaches that suggest ways of thinking about problems of reflection on curricular and teaching praxis (the core focus of the tradition) which the editors believe are accessible to North American readers--with appropriate "translation." These ways of thinking and related praxis are very relevant to notions such as reflective teaching and the discourse on teachers as professionals. This book reports the findings from the tri-national video study Quality of Instruction in Physics (QuIP). Within the scope of the QuIP study, physics instruction was investigated in a total of 103 classes from-Finland, North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) and German-speaking Switzerland. The main aim was to identify typical patterns of physics instruction of the three samples and to investigate conditions under which these patterns are successful with respect to students' learning, interest and motivation. Among others instructional characteristics, the quality of students' practical work, successful patterns of sequencing, the subject matter structure and teaching strategies were investigated by means of analyses of video-recorded lessons. Variables external to instruction that were investigated included teachers' professional knowledge and students' cognitive abilities. The study followed a pre-post-design with data collection prior to and after an instructional unit on electrical energy and power. The results are well in line with the findings from large-scale international studies indicating a particularly successful instructional pattern in Finland. A comparison of characterisation of instruction in comparison between the three countries reveals important findings for the improvement of the teaching and learning of physics in secondary school education.
