Venezia prima di Venezia è l'arcipelago dalle tante isole sulle quali, secondo il mito di fondazione di una delle pochissime città nate durante il medioevo, avrebbero trovato rifugio le popolazioni in fuga dai barbari. Ma la realtà storica è diversa dal mito. All'inizio del medioevo si formò lentamente nella laguna veneta un centro urbano, prima chiamato Rialto e poi Venezia. Un piccolo insediamento lagunare dell'alto Adriatico, erede di una vasta regione dell'impero romano, la Venetia et Histria, che un tempo si estendeva dall'Istria al fiume Adda. Il libro ricostruisce lo sviluppo del ducato veneziano nel corso dei secoli VI-VIII a partire dalle strutture militari bizantine, in un rapporto dinamico sia con i poteri di terraferma (il regno longobardo e poi l'impero carolingio), sia con quelli con base in Oriente e sul mare (Bisanzio, e poi gli Slavi e i Saraceni). Si formò così una comunità politica che nel corso dei secoli IX e X seppe creare le basi per la sua straordinaria crescita commerciale nel Mediterraneo. Il libro mostra anche il volto materiale della nuova città: le case, le chiese, gli edifici del potere pubblico e religioso. Una città che era quasi esclusivamente di legno, con pochi edifici in mattone e pietra, e che – per quanto costruita sull'acqua – di acqua era povera. Così come aveva bisogno di terra e perciò di bonifiche per stare all'asciutto e per allargare lo spazio abitabile. Non meno importante è la descrizione delle traiettorie degli altri insediamenti 'perdenti' della laguna – Metamauco, Torcello, Equilo, Cittanova – in un momento in cui la competizione all'interno della laguna non aveva ancora decretato un vincitore.

[Italiano]: In un momento così significativo per la storia europea e mondiale, questo volume vuole essere la raccolta di riflessioni scientifiche condotte sui rapporti tra le scelte politiche, le azioni militari e la fisionomia delle città e del paesaggio urbano, sull’evoluzione delle strutture e delle tecniche di difesa, sulla rappresentazione della guerra e dei suoi effetti sull’immagine urbana, sul recupero delle tracce della memoria cittadina. Da una parte il campo delle Digital Humanities apre nuove prospettive per studiare l'immagine della città prima, durante e dopo la guerra, dall’altro le tecnologie digitali impegnano studiosi e ricercatori di varie discipline: in particolare nell’ambito del disegno viene esplorato il ruolo della rappresentazione nella formulazione dei progetti urbani di difesa e nella documentazione degli eventi bellici e delle tracce lasciate dai conflitti, mentre nell’ambito del restauro vengono approfondite le sfide teoriche e pratiche imposte dai danni arrecati dai conflitti ai centri storici, passando in rassegna casi studio, soluzioni e dibattiti relativi alla conservazione del patrimonio urbano coinvolto in azioni di guerra, con un'attenzione particolare all'identità e alla memoria collettiva./[English]: At such a significant moment in European and world history, this volume aims to be a collection of scientific reflections about the relationships between political choices, military actions and the physiognomy of cities and the urban landscape, about the evolution of defence structures and techniques, about the representation of war and its effects on the urban image, and about the recovery of the traces of city memory. On the one hand the field of Digital Humanities opens up new perspectives to study the image of the city before, during and after the war, on the other hand digital technologies engage academics and researchers from various disciplines: In particular, in the area of drawing, the role of representation in the formulation of urban defence projects and in the documentation of wartime events and the traces left behind by conflicts is explored, while in the area of conservation, the theoretical and practical challenges imposed by the damage caused by conflicts to historic centres are explored, reviewing case studies, solutions and debates relating to the conservation of urban heritage involved in wartime actions, with a focus on identity and collective memory.

Temples are the most prestigious buildings in the urban landscape of ancient Italy, emerging within a network of centres of the then-known Mediterranean world. Notwithstanding the fragmentary condition of the buildings remains, these monuments and especially their richly decorated roofs are crucial sources of information on the constitution of political, social and craft identities, acting as agents in displaying the meaning of images. The subject of this volume is thematic and includes material from the Eastern Mediterranean (including Greece and Turkey). Contributors discuss the network between patron elites and specialized craft communities that were responsible for the sophisticated terracotta decoration of temples in Italy between 600 and 100 BC, focusing on the mobility of craft people and craft traditions and techniques, asking how images, iconographies, practices and materials can be used to explain the organization of ancient production, distribution and consumption. Special attention has been given to relations with the Eastern Mediterranean (Greece and Anatolia). Investigating craft communities, workshop organizations and networks has never been thoroughly undertaken for this period and region, nor for this exceptionally rich category of materials, or for the craftspeople producing the architectural terracottas. Papers in this volume aim to improve our understanding of roof production and construction in this period, to reveal relationships between main production centres, and to study the possible influences of immigrant craftspeople.

L’idea di un Convegno internazionale su La teoria del restauro nel Novecento da Riegl a Brandi è nata dall’esigenza di ricostruire le tappe fondamentali che hanno fatto del restauro un concetto centrale dell’odierno orizzonte culturale fino a culminare nella Teoria del restauro pubblicata da Cesare Brandi nel 1963. Fedeli all’articolazione del Convegno, gli atti che ora si pubblicano muovono da Aloi Riegl e dal contesto europeo per proseguire attraverso il contributo di altri protagonisti e concezioni: dalle sporadiche ma lucide prese di posizione di Roberto Longhi agli apporti di Corrado Ricci, Giulio Carlo Argan, Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti e Bruno Zevi. Inserita in questo plesso storico-culturale, la Teoria del Restauro è stata quindi indagata in quanto fulcro di un ampio spettro di ambiti e problematiche che, in sintonia con la proteiforme attività di Brandi, ha visto il coinvolgimento di studiosi di estetica, storici dell’arte, architetti, archeologi. Patrons, Authors and Workshops invokes a cross-disciplinary approach to the study of late medieval books and book production in Paris, from the troubled years of the early fifteenth century onwards. It shows the extent to which such activity was able to flourish even against the backdrop of the endemic struggle between Burgundians and Armagnacs, or the subsequent English invasion which led to Agincourt and the regency of Bedford. Extensive coverage is given to the key role played by the libraire, to the author as scribe or copyist (Christine de Pisan, Jean Lebegue), and also to the development of commercial production under figures such as Jean Trepperel. A section on bibliophiles and their various commissions leads into a group of essays that focus on particular texts and authors, whilst a further section concentrates on what we can discover about the role of the scribe. The volume concludes with four essays offering insights into the work of particular artists and illuminators. The authors include scholars from the UK, France, Greece, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and the USA. Godfried Croenen is Lecturer in French at the University of Liverpool. Peter Ainsworth is Professor of French at the University of Sheffield.
