Understanding how the brain functions is one of the most ambitious current scientific goals. This challenge will only be accomplish by a multidisciplinary approach involving genetics, molecular biology, optics, ethology, neurobiology and mathematics and using tractable model systems. The zebrafish larva is a transparent genetically tractable small vertebrate, ideal for the combination state-of-the- art imaging techniques (e.g. two-photon scanning microscopy, single-plane illumination microscopy, spatial light modulator microscopy and lightfield microscopy), bioluminiscence and optogenetics to monitor and manipulate neuronal activity from single specific neurons up to the entire brain, in an intact behaving organism. Furthermore, the zebrafish model offers large and increasing collection of mutant and transgenic lines modelling human brain diseases. With these advantages in hand, the zebrafish larva became in the recent years, a novel animal model to study neuronal circuits and behaviour, taking us closer than ever before to understand how the brain controls behaviour.

How new genetic techniques are revolutionizing the study of neural circuits for both invertebrate and vertebrate systems. Understanding how specific types of neurons contribute to behaviour is an ambitious goal. For invertebrate model systems (e.g. worms, flies), neurons in the brain are often too small to be studied routinely by electrophysiological approaches. For vertebrates, large ensembles of cells have to be studied, and these cells are often distributed over considerable volumes e.g. GABAergic interneurons in neocortex. Cell type-selective manipulations may be a way forward for treating illness. Before such aims can be realized, or even appreciated as feasible, the brain circuitry in experimental animals has to be known by both establishing the connections between cell types and reversibly manipulating the activity of the cells subtype-selectively. Methods that have all appeared in just the last couple of years to tackle this include: retrograde tracing of circuitry using viruses, ligand-receptor combinations that make subtypes of neurons uniquely sensitive to a drug (e.g. zolpidem, allatostatin, serotonin ligands or ivermectin), and light-activated channels and pumps for stimulation and inhibition. This collection of methods promises much, forming the new subdisciplines of “pharmacogenetics” and “opticogenetics”. These methods are revolutionizing the study of brain circuitry for both invertebrates and vertebrate systems.

Optogenetics written by Peter Hegemann and has been published by Walter de Gruyter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-08-28 with Science categories.
Optogenetics combines genetic engineering with optics to observe and control the function of cells using light, with clinical implications for restoration of vision and treatment of neurological diseases. As a new discipline much of the basic science and methods are currently under investigation and active development, thus there is a strong need for introductory literature in this field. This graduate level textbook provides an overview of the field of optogenetics in 5 concise chapters: Optogenetic tools, Applications in cellular systems, Mapping neuronal networks, Clinical applications and Restoration of vision and hearing. The concept and content was developed with top international researchers and students at a prestigious Dahlem Conference workshop.

The development of more effective treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders requires scientific progress on a broad front. Animal models have a vital role to play in advancing the field. When deployed in conjunction with detailed study of these diseases in man they bring the power to make controlled experimental interventions which allow the functional consequences of genetic variations and polymorphisms to be understood in terms of their cellular, systems and behavioural effects. Further, they provide a means by which complex cognitive and behavioural phenomena may be dissected and understood. Finally, they provide a bridge to understanding the effects of drugs on the functioning of the central nervous system, thereby improving our understanding of the actions of those drugs in man.

Developmental Neuroendocrinology written by Susan Wray and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-02 with Medical categories.
In this book, experts in the field discuss the latest research in developmental neuroendocrinology. Given that the hypothalamus is the center of neuroendocrine activity, the reader will learn about the molecular specification of hypothalamic cells, developmental modulators and epigenetic factors influencing hypothalamic development, and the development of neuroendocrine circuits. Each chapter provides a concise review of the current and future perspectives in developmental neuroendocrinology. Important insights into state-of-the-art techniques applied to functional circuit tracking, lineage tracing of hypothalamic cells, and the identification of genes altered through epigenetic mechanisms are also provided. Given its scope, the book will appeal to all students and researchers who are eager to understand the processes involved in hypothalamus development and the establishment of neuroendocrine circuits. This is the ninth volume in the International Neuroendocrine Federation (INF) Masterclass in Neuroendocrinology series* that aims to illustrate highest standards and encourage the use of the latest technologies in basic and clinical research and hopes to provide inspiration for further exploration into the exciting field of neuroendocrinology. *Volumes 1-7 published by Wiley.
