La più antica forma di traduzione, l’interpretazione, è divenuta oggetto di ricerca scientifica negli ultimi decenni, in particolare a seguito della crescente diffusione dell’interpretazione simultanea. I processi cognitivi che la sottendono, i fattori pragmatici che la determinano e la definizione della qualità sono alcuni degli aspetti che da sempre hanno richiamato l’interesse degli studiosi a livello internazionale. Il testo ripercorre il cammino scientifico dell’interpretazione come disciplina a partire dai primi studi degli anni 1950 e approfondisce il tema dell’interpretazione interlinguistica confrontandola e distinguendola dalla traduzione e illustrandone le peculiarità. Al fine di descrivere l’interpretazione, e principalmente l’interpretazione simultanea, sia come processo interpretativo sia come testo interpretato, il volume analizza le diverse modalità (interpretazione di trattativa, interpretazione consecutiva, interpretazione simultanea), gli eventi comunicativi in cui vengono attuate, le risorse cognitive e comunicative su cui poggiano, le strategie impiegate e i parametri che determinano un’interpretazione di qualità.

La premessa fondamentale dei saggi in questo volume è che la mediazione linguistica e l’interpretariato in ambito giuridico sono rilevanti per la tutela dei diritti umani primari e che tutti gli individui hanno diritto a un processo equo. Molti capitoli di questo libro hanno messo in rilievo come la traduzione e l’interpretariato siano mezzi utili a scavalcare le barriere tra persone che non parlano la stessa lingua; salvaguardano i diritti dell’individuo, sia esso imputato, testimone o vittima e garantiscono la sicurezza dell’intera comunità. Ogni autore presenta un diverso background formativo e di esperienze: dal mondo accademico a quello istituzionale, dagli interpreti in tribunale a quelli del linguaggio dei segni per la Comunità Sorda. Si tratta insomma di contesti formativi diversi per dare voce a diversi settori dell’ambiente giuridico, quello delle forze di polizia, dei tribunali, degli istituti penitenziari e dei centri di identificazione ed espulsione. Mondi complessi in cui si proiettano due professioni complesse: la mediazione linguisticoculturale e l’interpretariato legale. Analizzando le vulnerabilità del sistema attuale e le debolezze settoriali di oggi, soprattutto a livello normativo, guardiamo in avanti per migliorare alcuni aspetti di domani, in cui ci si augura che la recente Direttiva europea possa essere applicata integralmente: dal reclutamento regolamentato dei mediatori linguistico-culturali alla identificazione di ruoli e competenze precise, dall’istituzione di un registro professionale alla qualità del processo traduttivo. Tutto in virtù di un miglioramento della comunicazione grazie a un ruolo, quello del mediatore-interprete, fondamentale ma spesso sottovalutato, nel contatto fra il mondo dei migranti e quello della società di accoglienza.

Terminato il primo ciclo di studi universitari (laurea triennale in mediazione linguistica o in lingue straniere) lo studente con una buona preparazione linguistica (livello intermedio) può incominciare a pensare ad un lavoro con il russo come free lance o come dipendente. Ma quasi sempre è necessaria una preparazione aggiuntiva o specifica. Traduzione editoriale, legale, audiovisiva, interpretazione simultanea e consecutiva, interpretariato forense, insegnamento nella scuola superiore, accompagnatore turistico: sono attività e professioni interessanti da prendere in considerazione. Per che tipo di lavoro sono adatto? Una riflessione su questo argomento è importante e necessaria. Ma bisogna anche sapersi adattare e saper fare più di una cosa. Quindi non solo traduzione editoriale, ma anche legale, per esempio. Non solo traduzione scritta, ma anche orale. Non solo traduzione commerciale, ma anche tecnica. In passato le abilità per tradurre in russo documenti relativi a prodotti, servizi e macchinario, nonché quelle di interpretazione dialogica per la trattativa tecnico-commerciale venivano acquisite dal giovane mediatore sul posto di lavoro con lo studio autodidatta o con l’aiuto occasionale di colleghi più anziani. Evidentemente la preparazione linguistica generalista, non orientata ai linguaggi settoriali, non era motivo di preclusione al lavoro. Oggi non esistono più gli uffici per la traduzione della documentazione all’interno delle grandi aziende (un costo troppo oneroso) e il personale degli uffici commerciali e tecnici è ridotto. Per questi servizi l’azienda si rivolge sempre più spesso a traduttori esterni. Se invece assume qualcuno tende ad affidargli più di una mansione (non solo la traduzione), ma in ogni caso cerca un candidato con una buona conoscenza della lingua commerciale e tecnico-scientifica. Quindi la preparazione specialistica è ormai un requisito di base. Le abilità richieste per espletare il servizio di traduzione tecnico-commerciale non sono state acquisite durante il corso di studi a impronta umanistico-culturale ma, poiché la richiesta del datore di lavoro è precisa, concreta e non differita, è necessario prepararsi in anticipo a corrispondere una prestazione qualitativamente dignitosa. Per ottenere questo bisogna raggiungere sicurezza, competenza e velocità nell’ascolto e nella comprensione del russo, scioltezza e precisione nell’espressione orale e scritta e nell’interpretariato “in consecutiva”. Dialogue interpreting is a generic term covering a diverse range of fields of interpreting which have in common the basic feature of face-to-face interaction between three parties: the interpreter and (at least) two other speakers. The interaction consists of spontaneous dialogue, involving relatively short turns at talk, in two languages. It is usually goal-directed in the sense that there is some outcome to be negotiated. The studies in this volume cover several different fields: courtroom interpreting, doctor-patient interviews, immigration interviews, etc., and involve a range of different languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, More and Austrian Sign Language. They have in common that they view the interpreter as just one of the parties to this three-way exchange, in which each participant's moves can affect each other participant and thus the outcome of the event. In Part I, new research directions are explored in studies which piece together evidence of the ways dialogue interpreters actually behave and the effects of their behaviour. This is followed by two studies which discuss traditional interpreter roles - the 'King's Linguist' in Burkina Faso and the Oranda Tsûji, official interpreters employed in isolationist eighteenth-century Japan to ensure contact with the outside world. Finally, issues involved in training are the subject of two chapters relating to Austria and the UK. The variety of aspects and approaches represented in the volume - linguistic, cultural, pragmatic, historical - offer a rich and fascinating overview of the field of dialogue interpreting studies as it now stands.
