In questo numero di Archeologia dell’Architettura vengono pubblicati gli atti di un convegno che si è tenuto ad Arezzo, il 7-8 febbraio 2020, nell’ambito del progetto europeo ERC: Petrifying Wealth. The Southern European Shift to Masonry as Collective Investment in Identity, c. 1050-1300, diretto da Ana Rodríguez e Sandro Carocci. Nel convegno archeologi e storici italiani, francesi e spagnoli – con l’aggiunta di un britannico e un polacco, si sono interrogati, sulla base di fonti scritte, archeologiche e materiali sulla grande stagione architettonica che dal romanico arriva fino al gotico del XIV secolo. Al centro del dibattito, affrontato in 17 contributi, sono stati i variegati significati di un investimento finalizzato a costruire grandi edifici monumentali. Da un lato, l’obiettivo era affermare e rappresentare forti identità individuali, di gruppo o di una comunità, urbana o rurale, in un periodo storico di forti conflitti e competizioni, dall’altro sfidare il tempo con edifici in pietra e di alto livello architettonico. Una sfida, questa, largamente vinta dal momento che quegli edifici definiscono ancora l’immagine di molti centri storici europei.

Il volume XLVIII (2021) è suddiviso, come di consueto, in tre sezioni, Saggi, Notizie scavi e lavori sul campo e Note e Discussioni. Tra i saggi viene presentato un corposo contributo su S. Sisto Project (PIsa) a cura di F. Cantini. J. Celani pubblica un contributo sulle città dell’Umbria nel primo alto Medioevo, mentre M. Randazzo presenta uno studio sulla transizione bizantino-islamica nell’area di Enna. Conclude il volume la sezione Recensioni e segnalazioni. La sezione dedicata alle notizie degli scavi contiene un contributo sullo scavo della pieve di Santa Maria in Castello a Toano (dal cimitero alla torre di età comunale) (N. Mancassola), un secondo articolo è incentrato sulle indagini archeologiche della fortezza bizantina di Luni (A. Cagnana et al.), mentre un testo a cura di F. Cantini riporta nuovi dati sull’area della corte regia di Lucca e sulla zecca urbana; conclude la sezione il consueto spazio dedicato al Bacino del Mediterraneo con un contributo sul popolamento e l’organizzazione territoriale di Hisn Salama (Libia) (H. Abdouli). La Sezione Note e Discussioni accoglie contributi che hanno per tema l’archeologia del territorio e delle strutture murarie come ad esempio la cronologia e l’analisi funzionale del Castello di Comiso (G. Labisi) e le analisi territoriali di Salpi nella Capitanata (R. Goffredo, A. Cardone). Altri temi trattati riguardano le analisi dei materiali: la ceramica tra la tarda Antichità e l’alto Medioevo a Perugia (L. Ceccarelli); i segni graffiti sulla pietra ollare (M. Cortelazzo); le analisi archeobotaniche del lino nel contesto bizantino di Rocchicella di Mineo (A.M. Grasso et al.). Il contributo di A. Cianciosi affronta il tema del “pozzo alla veneziana” e l’approvvigionamento idrico nella laguna di Venezia. Conclude la sezione un articolo su Madaba in Giordania attraverso i resoconti dei primi esploratori (A. Pascolini) e una nota preliminare sul porto di Madayi (Kerala, India) e il commercio post-classico nell’Oceano Indiano fra tarda Antichità e Medioevo (V. La Salvia, M. Moderato, D.V. Hill).

In the last few decades, a surprisingly large variety of subjects and styles of rock art have been brought to light in northern Chad by scholars and passionate travellers. In the Ennedi region, relatively recent painted scenes of daily life occur, but also earlier human figures and rare events such as a leopard hunt. However, what is really characteristic of this region are the galloping mounted horses and camels, painted in original styles. Interestingly, the DStretch® plugin to ImageJ© has recently made it possible to see that in some cases the visible paintings are superimposed on older, faint images, very different in style and barely discernible to the naked eye. In some cases, paintings in an archaic style are revealed where just blurry spots appear on rocks. Farther to the east on the Ennedi plateau, the Niola Doa groups of intricately decorated human figures stand out as a superlative example of Saharan art. The focus of the volume is the most significant art, blended into the spectactular landforms of the region. We can only imagine the Ennedi landscape at the time the artists were decorating the rock surfaces with their pictograms and petroglyphs, but it must have been a sensational sight.

This book describes a novel machine-learning based approach to answer some traditional archaeological problems, relating to archaeological site detection and site locational preferences. Institutional data collected from six Swiss regions (Zurich, Aargau, Grisons, Vaud, Geneva and Fribourg) have been analyzed with an original conceptual framework based on the Random Forest algorithm. It is shown how the algorithm can assist in the modelling process in connection with heterogeneous, incomplete archaeological datasets and related cultural heritage information. Moreover, an in-depth review of past and more recent works of quantitative methods for archaeological predictive modelling is provided. The book guides the readers to set up their own protocol for: i) dealing with uncertain data, ii) predicting archaeological site location, iii) establishing environmental features importance, iv) and suggest a model validation procedure. It addresses both academics and professionals in archaeology and cultural heritage management, and offers a source of inspiration for future research directions in the field of digital humanities and computational archaeology.
