What is it that excites and interests your students? Reading first hand what skills top marketers really look for in graduates? Debating the benefits of using shock and fear appeals in advertising? Determining how to use social networking sites to successfully market a product? Marketing, Second Edition, presents marketing examples and issues from exciting real-life situations. Packed full of case studies from international organizations including Innocent, Orange, HMV, and Oxfam, it enables students to see first hand what top marketers actually do and how they tackle the decisions they have to make. The text also discusses the theory that supports those skills vital to marketing success across all areas of society, from dealing with skeptical consumers, selling products to the government, and deciding which pricing approach to adopt to the ethical implications of marketing to children and the best ways to use social networking sites in marketing efforts. Employing a lively writing style, the authors encourage students to explore beyond classical marketing perspectives and provoke them into thinking critically about how they would approach marketing issues. Links to seminal papers throughout each chapter also present the opportunity to take this learning further.

As a psychologist by education, my interest is in how people solve problems. At the Economic Institute of Leyden Universi ty, I learned that economists study human behavior too, although their studies are limited to economic affairs. At the Institute of Scientific Research on Consumer Affairs became (SWOKA), I aware of the needs of consumer organizations and the government for consumer research to base their policy on. At Erasmus University Rotterdam, I got the opportunity to integrate my interests and knowledge into this book. The first part of the book attempts to integrate psychological theories of attitude, perception, motivation and decision into economics. Both disciplines are concerned with human behavior, and the economic paradigm of demand, subj ect to restrictions, is combined with the psychological tradition of direct measurements of perceptions and motivations. This results in a micro-model of economic choice that can be tested by means of information obtained directly from consumers. The empirical study deals with the problem of scrapping a durable consumption good. By means of a consumer survey, the micro-model of choice is applied to the decision to scrap a durable good, or to repair the good in case of a defect. This individual decision obviously is connected with the large scale problem of waste, and with the manufacturer's problem of producing durable goods with a certain quality and durabili ty.

This book develops a new theoretical framework to examine the issues of economic growth and development. Providing analysis of economic dynamics in a competitive economy under government intervention in infrastructure and income distribution, the book develops a unique analytical framework under the influence of traditional neoclassical growth theory. However, in a departure from neoclassical growth theory it examines both the Solow-Swan and the Ramsey growth models, introducing a utility function which treats consumer choices in ways critically different to previous approaches. Using practical examples and models the book demonstrates how this new direction can effectively analyze the key issues of economic growth, in a compact and comprehensive manner.

Down-to-earth, highly engaging, and thorough, Consumer Behavior in Action does more than any other consumer behavior textbook to generate student interest and involvement through extensive in-class and written application exercises. The text's four parts can be covered in any sequence after Part I, which provides an overview of consumer behavior and covers foundational material on market segmentation. Part II covers the consumer decision-making process in general as well as each of the specific stages of that process. Part III investigates societal influences on consumer behavior, from society and culture to interpersonal, and Part IV deals with the micro-psychological influences on consumer decision-making. Each chapter includes several exercises in self-contained units, each with its own applications, as well as learning objectives and an easy-to-understand background textual discussion. Each chapter also includes a key concepts list, review questions, and a solid summary to help initiate further student research. The text includes ten different types of engaging exercises: analysis of advertisements, analysis of scenarios, introspection into students' own consumer behavior, interactive Internet exercises, experimental and survey fieldwork, quantitative exercises, creative exercises, debatable issues, ethical analyses, and marketplace analyses. An Online Instructor's Manual is available to adopters.
