This collection brings together social semiotic, ethnographic, and conversation analytic approaches to multimodality in global studies of shopping, drawing on the rich diversity of the latest multimodal methods to critically reflect on shopping as a cornerstone of contemporary social life. The volume explores shopping as an area of study in its own right, with the buying and selling of goods and services a fundamental part of the social and cultural life of human communities for centuries. The book looks at both online and offline shopping, examining it as both everyday multi-sensorial practice and its translation into the interactive text and imagery that comprise the online shopping experience, from London street markets to Japanese grocery shops to Danish supermarkets to worldwide online shopping sites. Highlighting the diversity of modern multimodal approaches through contributions from established scholars, the book critically surveys both the challenges and opportunities in the embodied interactions between buyers and sellers and how these points of connection have been translated and will continue to transform in the age of algorithms and emergent technologies. This book will appeal to students and scholars interested in multimodality, multimodal conversation analysis, social semiotics, social interaction, and retail studies.

Relational And Multimodal Higher Education written by Nataša Lacković and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-09-29 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
This book proposes a relational turn in higher education by conceptualizing knowledge and pedagogy as relational and multimodal, analyzed through three dimensions of relationality: social, technological, and environmental. The volume draws on interdisciplinary approaches that make a case for integrating these interconnected and distinct dimensions in higher education theory and practice. Its novelty lies in combining such a variety of perspectives with Peircean semiotics to explore what it means to learn and live relationally. It emphasizes the importance of critical reflection, rooted in an environmental understanding of knowledge and digital media. This approach integrates materiality, place, and space in higher education, positioning caring, critically reflective and imaginative interactions and interpretations as central for knowledge growth. The volume features practical case studies of relational pedagogy through dialogues with diverse higher education practitioners, which embrace expression and creation through more than one dominant modality of communication and being. The book envisions students and educators as relational agents, with relational awareness and responsibility, aware of their multimodal identities. It highlights how a relational multimodal paradigm can serve as a way forward for universities to address global challenges concerning social, (post)digital, and environmental futures. This innovative book will be of interest to scholars, students, teachers, and policymakers in higher education, semiotics and multimodality, as well as postdigital, sociomaterial and futures studies.

Multimodality Ideology And Manipulation written by Jacopo Castaldi and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-04-30 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
This book examines how sociopolitical and intercultural ideologies surrounding globalisation and neoliberalism are constructed and negotiated in travel documentaries, focusing on the role of the BBC in reproducing neo-imperialistic and neoliberal values. It argues that these documentaries naturalise the values underpinning globalisation and justify the exploitation of resources from the United Kingdom and the West at the expense of developing countries, reflecting forms of neo-imperialism. After discussing the role of the BBC as a public service provider and the research’s theoretical and methodological foundations, three case studies explore the semiotic and cognitive processes involved in media effects. Through an interdisciplinary approach integrating multimodal critical discourse analysis, audience research, and relevance theory, the book contributes to discussions on the application of multimodality theory to social concerns and addresses academic communities in media studies, critical discourse studies, and semiotics. This book will interest scholars in multimodality, critical discourse analysis, media and communication studies, and semiotics.

This collection responds to the need for theoretically informed and methodologically grounded empirical research on the global transformations in multimodal human communication and social practices in light of recent widespread change. The volume highlights the need to expand on the established approaches--Social Semiotics, Multimodal Discourse Analysis, and Multimodal (Inter)action Analysis--by complementing them with other analytical frameworks to better understand the impact of unprecedented global challenges, such as Covid-19, on the way humans communicate and make use of meaning-making resources. Bringing together established and emergent scholars from a variety of geographical, cultural, and linguistic contexts, the collection presents studies from both the Global North and Global South, including South Africa, Latin America, Brazil, and the Caribbean, to showcase new perspectives in multimodality research. This innovative book will be of interest to students and scholars in multimodality, social semiotics, and discourse analysis.

This collection critically examines the notion of mediation as it manifests itself at the intersection of multimodal literature, education, and translation studies, bringing together perspectives from established and early career scholars. The volume seeks to synthesize the fields of education and translation by exploring points of difference and commonality through multimodal communication, which has grown increasingly crucial in both fields, and how these intersect in picturebooks and graphic narratives, including graphic novels, illustrated books, and other related genres. The book begins with considerations on the multimodal as mediator and how multimodal forms mediate their messages for educational contexts. Next, the exploration of translation as mediation and mediation as translation contemplates the ways in which picturebooks serve as intersemiotic translations of previously verbal texts and as a means of translating abstract concepts into tangible forms. Finally, there is a showcase of empirical research on the mediation of multimodal literature in diverse education settings from around the world. Taken together, the collection makes the case for further study of mediation and multimodality as a valuable concept for advancing research in translation and education. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars in multimodality, children’s literature, translation studies, and educational research.

Appraisal Sentiment And Emotion Analysis In Political Discourse written by Claudia Roberta Combei and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-16 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
This book adopts a multi-method multimodal approach to the study of online political communication, applying it to case studies from the United Kingdom, France, and Italy towards offering a portrait of the rapid ideological shifts in contemporary Western democracies. The volume introduces an integrated framework combining Sentiment and Emotion Analysis, rooted in lexical semantics, and the qualitative dimensions of Appraisal Theory, applying it to large corpora of online political communication from the United Kingdom, France, and Italy. Combei and Reggi highlight their combined potential in analysing the multimodal resources in such discourses and in turn revealing fresh insights into layers of subtext and the ways in which parties and movements frame their political programmes and values. The authors also take into account culture- and language-specific variables across the three countries in shaping such discourses. The volume makes the case for an integrated methodological framework that can be uniquely applied to better understand the multimodal communicative landscape of divisiveness in today’s rapidly shifting political climate and other forms of online communication more broadly. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in digital communication, political communication, multimodality, and qualitative and quantitative discourse analysis, especially those interested in corpus-assisted approaches.

The Semiotics Of Toys And Games written by Theo van Leeuwen and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-10-17 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
Drawing on extensive research over more than two decades, this book focuses on toys and games as resources for play. It analyses their functionalities as well as their symbolic meaning potentials, exemplifying how they are used in different contexts, such as home and preschool, and how these uses are regulated by parental, pedagogic and marketing discourses. Building on the work of semioticians such as Barthes, Baudrillard and Krampen, as well as on the social semiotics of Halliday, Hodge, Kress, and others, the book introduces a framework for the multimodal semiotic analysis of physical objects, and the ways in which they are digitally translated into words, images and sounds. It also introduces a multimodal framework with a focus on designs for and in learning. It then applies these frameworks to a range of toys and games for young children including teddy bears, dolls, construction toys, war toys and digital games. Throughout it shows how the toy and games industry contributes to changing the nature of childhood and the way children learn about the world. Accessibly written, the book will not only be relevant to students and scholars of multimodality and semiotics, but also to early childhood educators and parents of young children.

Language Assemblages written by Alastair Pennycook and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-30 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
What are languages? An assemblage approach to language gives us ways of thinking about language as dynamic, constructed, open-ended, and in and of the world. This book unsettles regular accounts of knowledge about language in several ways, presenting an innovative and provocative framework for a new understanding of language from within applied linguistics. The idea of assemblages allows for a flexibility about what languages are, not just in terms of having fuzzy linguistic boundaries but in terms of what constitutes language more generally. Languages are assembled from different elements, both linguistic elements as traditionally understood, as well as items less commonly included. Language from this point of view is embedded in diverse social and physical environments, distributed across the material world and part of our embodied existence. This book looks at what language is and what languages are with a view to understanding applied linguistics itself as a practical assemblage.
