A preocupação com a formação docente no Brasil é recente. Segundo Gatti (2010), somente nas primeiras décadas do século XX, “os ventos da modernização” fizeram aparecer a preocupação com a formação de professores para o chamado estudo secundário (que hoje corresponde aos anos finais do ensino fundamental e ao ensino médio) em cursos específicos.
