Karen Blixen, sans doute meilleure fermière que linguiste, écrivait : " Le swahili, idiome des tribus côtières, est un langage primitif et non grammatical " ( Ombres sur la prairie, traduit du danois, Paris, 1962, p. 6 ). Ces idées n'ont certainement pas disparu d'une certaine vision touristique de l'Afrique de l'Est. Le terme swahili, voire kiswahili ( le ki- indique qu'il s'agit d'une langue ), est apparu dans les écrits des premiers voyageurs et missionnaires européens en Afrique orientale et australe au milieu du XIXe siècle. Le kiswahili était la langue de Zanzibar, et Zanzibar était pour beaucoup une île des Mille et une nuits. Au milieu du XXe siècle, le kiswahili est devenu la langue d'un grand pays, la Tanzanie, né de l'union entre le Tanganyika et Zanzibar. Cette langue, qui était perçue comme une langue de marins ou de commerçants côtiers musulmans, est aujourd'hui la langue d'un immense pays et demain peut-être de toute une région, l'Afrique de l'Est, depuis que le Kenya développe son enseignement. Le kiswahili a partie liée avec le panafricanisme et son avenir ne peut laisser indifférents les amis de l'Afrique. En faire une langue moderne a demandé un travail de près d'un siècle, dont ce livre rend compte. Dire le monde d'aujourd'hui - du rap à la science-fiction - dans une grande langue bantoue demeure un projet digne d'intérêt. Tel fut le rêve de Julius Nyerere !

Le swahili est une langue bantoue parlée en Afrique de l’Est par plus de cent millions de locuteurs. Il est constitué de plusieurs dialectes anciens (kipemba, kilamu, kiunguja...) mais aussi de plus récents (sheng, swahili de Lubumbashi). La présente étude porte sur l’un de ces dialectes récents, apparu durant la colonisation belge en République Démocratique du Congo, à savoir le swahili de Lubumbashi. C’est un parler linguistiquement autonome et stable – même s’il fait preuve d’une relative flexibilité – qui demeure indiscutablement dans la sphère swahili. Il est porteur d’une littérature orale (épopées, mythes, fables, chants, contes, légendes) et de nombreuses créations culturelles et artistiques, notamment théâtrales. L’objectif de l’ouvrage est de décrire cette langue dans ses grandes lignes, de mettre en avant sa richesse et sa vitalité ainsi que ses spécificités par rapport au swahili d’Afrique de l’Est. Un volet sociolinguistique et historique montre aussi le rôle qu’elle tient dans la construction de l’identité lushoise. Le tout est illustré par quelques textes et par un important lexique. Aurélia Ferrari est spécialiste des parlers africains émergents, du swahili dans la Diaspora et de didactique des langues. Elle a enseigné le swahili et la linguistique au ministère des Affaires étrangères, à l’Université du Ghana, à l’Université de Sanaa (Yemen), et à l’INALCO. Marcel Kalunga est professeur à l’Université de Kalemi (RDC) et chercheur spécialiste des langues bantoues. Il a précédemment dirigé le centre des Langues vivantes de la Faculté des Lettres de l’Université de Lubumbashi (UNILU). Il a reçu par deux fois le prix Kadima de la Traduction, décerné par l’Organisation internationale de la Francophonie. Georges Mulumbwa est chercheur à l’Observatoire du Changement urbain et chef de travaux à la Faculté des Lettres et des Sciences humaines de l’Université de Lubumbashi.
