"In this volume, Jean Piaget sets out to examine current teaching methods which, he concludes, can be compared to crude method of rote "force feeding." The foundations of M. Piaget's studies stem from his thesis that the human child is not only different from all other animal children but also different from all other animal children but also different at each stage of development-so different that many of today's teaching devices are irrelevant. Generally, M. Piaget accuses teachers of using an archaic educational approach and of not being concerned enough with the mental and emotional development of the pupil. Children, he believes, react passively to learning and thinking precisely because teachers remain content to "feed" them their lessons. The child then divorces learning from thought and feeling, and, thus, knowledge becomes equated with endless facts that are completely removed from his life and the growth of his mind. M. Piaget believes that it is the educational system's accent on administration rather than on psychology- the concentration on the science of educating rather than on the person who is learning- which undermines the child's spiritual and intellectual growth. M. Piaget presents here a forceful and convincing case- a case that is essential reading for anyone concerned with the most vital issue of our times. Jean Piaget was born in Neuchatel, Switzerland. A child prodigy who published important papers on mollusks while he was in high school, he left biology "haunted by the idea of discovering a sort of embryology of intelligence." He poured over the "wrong" answers given by children in I.Q. tests, kept extensive journals of his three children's reactions to his questions and their environment at different ages, and shot marbles with school children as he asked them their responses to various ethical, moral, and related questions. His observations led him to insights as to how children acquire such complicated concepts and abilities as space, geometry, causality, logic, moral judgement and memory. M. Piaget is the author of many books and articles. among them are Origins of Intelligence in Children and the Construction of Reality in the Child. He currently presides at the Institut des Sciences de l'Education in Geneva."
