The issue of quality in interpreting has been debated for almost three decades now. This volume is evidence of the sociological turn Interpreting Studies is taking on quality research. Based on either a socio-cognitive perspective, a sociological approach, or the situational social variability of the entire source and target context, this volume’s contributions analyse the respective roles of participants in a communicative event and the objective of an equivalent effect. The contributions from Europe, North America, and Australia signal a trend in the research on quality in interpreting: they challenge the concept that “sense” in a communication is a single, stable entity, and instead view it as something constructed in a common effort. This in turn highlights the interpreter’s social responsibility.

Handbook Of Translation Studies written by Yves Gambier and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

As a meaningful manifestation of how institutionalized the discipline has become, the new Handbook of Translation Studies is most welcome. It joins the other signs of maturation such as Summer Schools, the development of academic curricula, historical surveys, journals, book series, textbooks, terminologies, bibliographies and encyclopedias. The HTS aims at disseminating knowledge about translation and interpreting and providing easy access to a large range of topics, traditions, and methods to a relatively broad audience: not only students who often adamantly prefer such user-friendliness, researchers and lecturers in Translation Studies, Translation & Interpreting professionals; but also scholars and experts from other disciplines (among which linguistics, sociology, history, psychology). In addition the HTS addresses any of those with a professional or personal interest in the problems of translation, interpreting, localization, editing, etc., such as communication specialists, journalists, literary critics, editors, public servants, business managers, (intercultural) organization specialists, media specialists, marketing professionals. Moreover, The HTS offers added value. First of all, it is the first Handbook with this scope in Translation Studies that has both a print edition and an online version. The advantages of an online version are obvious: it is more flexible and accessible, and in addition, the entries can be regularly revised and updated. The Handbook is variously searchable: by article, by author, by subject. A second benefit is the interconnection with the selection and organization principles of the online Translation Studies Bibliography (TSB). The taxonomy of the TSB has been partly applied to the selection of entries for the HTS. Moreover, many items in the reference lists are hyperlinked to the TSB, where the user can find an abstract of a publication. All articles (between 500 and 6,000 words) are written by specialists in the different subfields and are peer-reviewed. Last but not least, the usability, accessibility and flexibility of the HTS depend on the commitment of people who agree that Translation Studies does matter. All users are therefore invited to share their feedback. Any questions, remarks and suggestions for improvement can be sent to the editorial team at hts@lessius.eu.

Interpreting Studies At The Crossroads Of Disciplines written by Simon Zupan and has been published by Frank & Timme GmbH this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-07 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Interdisciplinarity has been a defining feature of Interpreting Studies from its inception. The present volume comprises a selection of papers by authors from five different European countries; the papers explore the crossroads of various subdisciplines within Interpreting Studies and beyond. The contributions show that, while traditional approaches and combinations with other established disciplines such as sociology, law or linguistics remain common, advances in technology, in particular rapid software development, require that Interpreting Studies must also adapt to and accept a new social reality. Using examples from a range of institutional settings, the authors demonstrate what the effect of these changes has been and will be on the theory, teaching and practice of interpreting.

The importance of didactic training in conference interpreting has become the subject of increased discussion. This collective volume provides overviews of theories and examples of training practices and tools for a didactic approach to the development of interpreting competence. This book is geared towards new institutions offering interpreter training, teachers just starting out in conference interpreter training and who lack experience, as well as experienced interpreter training practitioners who may be interested in theory-based training. This volume does not aim to present in-depth scientific theories. Individual theoretical perspectives are discussed where they provide the basis for a specific application in interpreter training. The contributions are meant to serve as suggestions to provide a new perspective on various topics.

They address questions such as who can be called an interpreter, present new approaches to interpreter education, and discuss advances in technology, both in terms of speech-to-text interpreting and the changes that the Covid-19 pandemic has brought to the lives of interpreters. The breadth of this volume’s topics reflects the oeuvre of Franz Pöchhacker, who has left his mark on Interpreting Studies over more than three decades. This tribute not only reflects the many strands of his work, but also offers new research and insights by established scholars and young researchers in the ever growing field of Interpreting Studies.

The development of translation memories and machine translation have led to new quality assurance practices where translators have found themselves checking not only human translation but also machine translation outputs. As a result, the notions of revision and interpersonal competences have gained great importance with international projects recognizing them as high priorities. Quality Assurance and Assessment Practices in Translation and Interpreting is a critical scholarly resource that serves as a guide to overcoming the challenge of how translation and interpreting results should be observed, given feedback, and assessed. It also informs the design of new ways of evaluating students as well as suggesting criteria for professional quality control. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as quality management, translation tests, and competency-based assessments, this book is geared towards translators, interpreters, linguists, academicians, translation and interpreting researchers, and students seeking current research on the new ways of evaluating students as well as suggesting criteria for professional quality control in translation.
