Die Wiedervereinigung führte nicht nur zu signifikanten Veränderungen des gesellschaftlichen, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Lebens Deutschlands. Sie bewirkte auch die Vereinigung zweier Rundfunksysteme, die sich in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten stark unterschiedlich entwickelt hatten. Die größten Veränderungen waren dabei in Ostdeutschland zu beobachten, wo ein demokratisches Rundfunksystem eingeführt wurde. Doch auch bei den Medien der bisherigen BRD hatte die Wiedervereinigung große Auswirkungen. Die ARD strukturierte ihre Landesrundfunkanstalten neu. Auch beim Zweiten Deutschen Fernsehen (ZDF) oder der Deutschen Welle (DW) kam es zu entscheidenden Veränderungen: personell, finanziell, programmlich, rechtlich und strukturell. Darüber hinaus entstand der nationale Hörfunk als größte Innovation der neueren deutschen Rundfunkgeschichte. Die Lösung aller medienpolitischen Probleme, die sich in Jahrzehnten bundesrepublikanischer Geschichte manifestiert hatten, konnte die Neuordnung jedoch nicht leisten. Auf der Basis von Literatur-, Archiv- und Dokumentenrecherche sowie Leitfadeninterviews steht im Mittelpunkt dieser Untersuchung von Inga Hoff die Analyse, welche Auswirkungen die Wiedervereinigung auf den nicht föderal organisierten öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunk hatte - also das Zweite Deutsche Fernsehen (ZDF), die Deutsche Welle (DW) und die Entstehung des Deutschlandradios (DRadio) - wie diese Ostdeutschland integrierten und wie sich dies bis heute entwickelt hat. Integration meint dabei sowohl strukturelle, institutionelle und programmliche Integration von Seiten der Medien als auch die Integration durch ostdeutsche Zuschauer gemessen an Nutzungsdaten. Den medienpolitischen Entscheidungen im Zuge der Neuordnung gingen lange Verhandlungen voraus, in denen die jeweiligen Akteure opportunistisch agierten und die die einzelnen Sender unterschiedlich für sich nutzen konnten. Die DW profitierte von zahlreichen Übernahmen, das ZDF scheiterte mit seinem Wunsch, auch Hörfunk zu veranstalten, während das DRadio in einem medienpolitischen Kompromiss als nationaler Hörfunk installiert wurde. Im vereinten Deutschland weiteten die DW und das ZDF ihre Berichterstattungsstrukturen auf Ostdeutschland aus. Das DRadio griff auf das Korrespondentennetz des Deutschlandfunks zurück. Die einzelnen Sender integrierten Ostdeutschland mit unterschiedlichen Strategien, die jedoch ihren jeweiligen Ausgangsbedingungen und Ausrichtungen entsprechen. Bei allen nahm der zunächst vorhandene Sonderstatus Ostdeutschlands und der Ost-West-Integration im Laufe der Jahre ab. Auch Nutzungswerte in den alten und neuen Bundesländern nähern sich inzwischen an. Damit treten heute andere Herausforderungen für den öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunk wie das Gewinnen von jüngeren Zuschauern in den Vordergrund.
