«Papà, spiegami allora a che serve la storia» La domanda, ancora oggi attuale, fa capolino al momento di dar conto di questa raccolta di studi dedicati alla storia della scuola, dalla Roma di età imperiale fino alla Bisanzio di fine XIII - inizio XIV secolo, passando per alcune delle figure più significative di maestri d’epoca medievale di cui è rimasta traccia. Il volume raccoglie gli atti di una giornata di studi tenutasi presso l’Università Europea di Roma il 10 dicembre 2015, con la quale il corpo docenti del Corso di Laurea in Scienze della Formazione Primaria presso la medesima Università, insieme ad alcuni insigni specialisti del settore, ha inteso proporre al pubblico un contributo sulla storia del sistema scolastico tra mondo antico ed epoca medievale. Se la riflessione di Giuseppe Mari (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano) verte sulla considerazione sociale goduta dai maestri e il ruolo che questi hanno ricoperto (o dovrebbero ricoprire) nella società, in un singolare raffronto tra l’antichità e il nostro presente, quella di Giuseppe Tognon (Lumsa, Roma) offre una nuova lettura della celebre Storia dell’educazione nell’antichità di H.-I. Marrou, un classico in questo campo di studi. A tali saggi di carattere introduttivo fanno seguito alcuni contributi di carattere più specifico: mentre Francesca Romana Nocchi (Università degli Studi della Tuscia) si concentra sulla figura dell’assistente del maestro, con particolare riferimento all’età imperiale romana, Claudio Giammona (Sapienza Università di Roma) affronta il tema dell’istruzione elementare dedicandosi soprattutto all’analisi di trattati e testi grammaticali di lingua latina; infine, Lidia Capo (Sapienza Università di Roma) scandaglia la scarsa documentazione disponibile nel tentativo di ricostruire parzialmente le varie forme d’istruzione in età longobarda, non senza cogliere interessanti spunti di riflessione anche per la nostra contemporaneità.

I numeri 5 e 6 dei Quaderni di pedagogia della scuola intendono promuovere una riflessione critica e approfondita sul valore educativo, formativo e pedagogico dell’orientamento a scuolaa. Il volume risponde alla esigenza di dare un contributo alla riflessione sulle dimensioni culturali, pedagogiche e politiche implicate nella definizione del ruolo e delle funzioni dell’educatore. Achievement tests play an important role in modern societies. They are used to evaluate schools, to assign students to tracks within schools, and to identify weaknesses in student knowledge. The GED is an achievement test used to grant the status of high school graduate to anyone who passes it. GED recipients currently account for 12 percent of all high school credentials issued each year in the United States. But do achievement tests predict success in life? The Myth of Achievement Tests shows that achievement tests like the GED fail to measure important life skills. James J. Heckman, John Eric Humphries, Tim Kautz, and a group of scholars offer an in-depth exploration of how the GED came to be used throughout the United States and why our reliance on it is dangerous. Drawing on decades of research, the authors show that, while GED recipients score as well on achievement tests as high school graduates who do not enroll in college, high school graduates vastly outperform GED recipients in terms of their earnings, employment opportunities, educational attainment, and health. The authors show that the differences in success between GED recipients and high school graduates are driven by character skills. Achievement tests like the GED do not adequately capture character skills like conscientiousness, perseverance, sociability, and curiosity. These skills are important in predicting a variety of life outcomes. They can be measured, and they can be taught. Using the GED as a case study, the authors explore what achievement tests miss and show the dangers of an educational system based on them. They call for a return to an emphasis on character in our schools, our systems of accountability, and our national dialogue.
