New measurements of D{sub s} and D*{sub s}+ meson production rates from B decays and from q{bar q} continuum events near the?(4S) resonance are presented. Using 20.8 fb−1 of data on the?(4S) resonance and 2.6 fb−1 off resonance, we find the inclusive branching fractions?(B → D{sub s}+X) = (10.93 ± 0.19 ± 0.58 ± 2.73)% and?(B → D*{sub s}+ X) = (7.9 ± 0.8 ± 0.7 ± 2.0)%, where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the D{sub s}+ →??+ branching fraction uncertainty. The branching fractions??(B → D(*){sub s}+ {bar D}(*)) = (5.07 ± 0.14 ± 0.30 ± 1.27)% and??(B → D*{sub s}+ {bar D}(*)) = (4.1 ± 0.2 ± 0.4 ± 1.0)% are determined from the D(*){sub s}+ momentum spectra.

We present the results of a study of the decays Bs0 -> Ds()+ Ds()- with 121.4 f-1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e^+e- collider running on the [Upsilon](5S) resonance. Using fully reconstructed Bs0 mesons, we measure branching fractions to beB(Bs0 -> Ds^+ Ds- ) =(0.58+0.11-0.09±0.13)%, B(Bs0 -> Ds± Ds)= (1.8 ±0.2 ±0.4)%, andB(Bs0 -> Ds*+ Ds*- ) = (2.0 ±0.3 ±0.5)%;the sum isB(Bs0 -> Ds(+)+ Ds(+)- ) = (4.3 ±0.4 ±1.0)%. Assuming Bs0 -> Ds(+)+ Ds(+)- saturates decays to CP-even final states and taking CP violation to be negligibly small, we obtain [Delta][Gamma]s/[Gamma]swhere [Delta][Gamma]s is the difference in widths between the two Bs - Bs mass eigenstates and [Gamma]s is the mean decay width. Our result is [Delta][Gamma]s/[Gamma]s= 0.090 ±0.009 (stat.) +0.023-0.022 (syst.).

To constrain our knowledge of Bs production at the Upsilon(5S) by making other measurements with other model dependencies, we examine CLEO-c data for other particle species than Ds, that are produced with much higher rate in Bs meson decays than in B meson decays. Such particle like eta, eta' and &phis;, with their ss quark composition, are expected to be enhanced in Ds than in D meson decays. We therefore measure the inclusive branching fractions of charm mesons, namely D0, D + and D+s , into etaX, eta'X, and &phis;X decays. We find that the rates from D+s are much larger than from D0 and D+.

The production of D mesons in ee− annihilation for the center-of-mass energy range 3.7 to 7.0 GeV was studied with the MARK I magnetic detector at SPEAR. A resonance was observed in the total cross section for hadron production in ee− annihilation at an energy just above the threshold for charm production. This resonance, which is named psi'', has a mass of 3772 +- 6 MeV/c2, a total width of 28 +- 5 MeV/c2, a partial width to electron pairs of 345 +- 85 eV/c2, and decays almost exclusively into D anti D pairs. The psi'' provides a rich source of background-free and kinematically well defined D mesons for study. From produced in the decay of the psi'' the masses of the D° and D/sup +/ mesons were determined to be 1863.3 +- 0.9 MeV/c2 and 1868.3 +- 0.9 MeV/c2 respectively. Also the branching fractions for D° decay to K−.pi./sup +/, anti K°.pi./sup +/.pi.− and K−.pi./sup +/.pi.−.pi./sup +/ were determined to be (2.2 +- 0.6)%, (4.0 +- 1.3)%, and (3.2 +- 1.1)% and the branching fractions for D/sup +/ decay to anti K°.pi./sup +/ and K−.pi./sup +/.pi./sup +/ to be (1.5 +- 0.60)% and (3.9 +- 1.0)%. The average number of kaons per D decay was found to be 0.52 +- 0.14 K°'s and 0.42 +- 0.12 K/sup +/'s. The rate for inclusive production of D mesons at center-of-mass energies above the psi'' was measured; it is found that it can account for most, if not all, of the observed increase in the total hadronic cross-section for center-of-mass energies above 4 GeV. The inclusive momentum and energy spectra for D's were measured at the highest available center-of-mass energy (7 GeV). The energy spectra are rapidly decreasing functions of energy with a slope similar to the slope of the charged pion spectrum at the same center-of-mass energy. This behavior suggests that the fragmentation function of the charmed quark into charmed mesons is a decreasing function of the scaling variable z = 2E/sub D//E/sub CM/. 81 references.

B mesons are unique among well-established non-quarkonium mesons in their ability to decay into baryons. Baryonic B decays offer a wide range of interesting areas of study: they can be used to test our theoretical understanding of rare decay processes involving baryons, search for direct CP violation and study low-energy QCD. This thesis presents measurements of branching fractions and a study of the decay dynamics of the charmless three-body decays of B meson into p{bar p}h final states, where h = {pi}{sup +}, K{sup +}, K{sub S}{sup 0}, K*{sup 0} or K*{sup +}. With a sample of 232 million {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} events collected with the BaBar detector, we report the first observation of the B {yields} p{bar p}K*{sup 0} decay, and provide improved measurements of branching fractions of the other modes. The distribution of the three final-state particles is of particular interest since it provides dynamical information on the possible presence of exotic intermediate states such as the hypothetical pentaquark states {Theta}*{sup ++} and {Theta}{sup +}in the m{sub pK{sup +}} and m{sub pK{sub S}{sup 0}} spectra, respectively, or glueball states (such as the tensor glueball f{sub J}(2220)) in the m{sub p{bar p}} spectrum. No evidence for exotic states is found and upper limits on the branching fractions are set. An enhancement at low p{bar p} mass is observed in all the B {yields} p{bar p}h modes, and its shape is compared between the decay modes and with the shape of the time-like proton form factor. A Dalitz plot asymmetry in B {yields} p{bar p}K{sup +} mode suggests dominance of the penguin amplitude in this decay and disfavors the possibility that the low mass p{bar p} enhancement originates from the presence of a resonance below threshold (such as the recently seen baryonium candidate at 1835 MeV/c{sup 2}). We also identify decays of the type B {yields} X{sub c{bar c}}h {yields} p{bar p}h, where h = K{sup +}, K{sub S}{sup 0}, K*{sup 0} or K*{sup +}, and X{sub c{bar c}} = {eta}{sub c} or J/{psi}. In particular, we report on the evidence of the B {yields} {eta}{sub c}K*{sup +} decay and provide a measurement of the width of {eta}{sub c}.
