Information Arts written by Stephen Wilson and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-02-28 with Social Science categories.

An introduction to the work and ideas of artists who use—and even influence—science and technology. A new breed of contemporary artist engages science and technology—not just to adopt the vocabulary and gizmos, but to explore and comment on the content, agendas, and possibilities. Indeed, proposes Stephen Wilson, the role of the artist is not only to interpret and to spread scientific knowledge, but to be an active partner in determining the direction of research. Years ago, C. P. Snow wrote about the "two cultures" of science and the humanities; these developments may finally help to change the outlook of those who view science and technology as separate from the general culture. In this rich compendium, Wilson offers the first comprehensive survey of international artists who incorporate concepts and research from mathematics, the physical sciences, biology, kinetics, telecommunications, and experimental digital systems such as artificial intelligence and ubiquitous computing. In addition to visual documentation and statements by the artists, Wilson examines relevant art-theoretical writings and explores emerging scientific and technological research likely to be culturally significant in the future. He also provides lists of resources including organizations, publications, conferences, museums, research centers, and Web sites.

Computers are more and more becoming creative tools in music as well as in the visual arts and design. In the last few years, it has become clear that digital technology provides a platform for multimedia productions as well as a medium for new art forms. Computer Music and Computer Graphics & Animation have their own international forums. The need was felt, however, to bring together the diverse disciplines within art and technology in one international event - the First International Symposium on Electronic Art (FISEA). The Symposium attracted considerable interest and hundreds of papers and proposals were submitted, of which a selection were accepted. This book, also published as a supplement to the journal Leonardo, publishes 20 of these selected papers under the editorship of Wim van der Plas, Ton Hokken and Johan den Biggelaar. This richly illustrated issue on Electronic Art reflects the enormous international interest which FISEA generated and will further stimulate interest in applications of new technology in music, visual arts and design.

Working extensively as both artist and scientist, Aldo Giorgini (1934-1994) was one of the first computer artists to combine software writing with early printing technologies. His innovative process involved producing pen-plotted drawings that were embellished by painting, drawing, photography, and screen printing. This biography is the first to uncover the remarkable work and life of an underappreciated artist, providing insights into the innovative methods and computerized techniques he used to weave creations that seamlessly combined technological sophistication with artistic sensibility.Buried manuscripts, documentation, and art taken directly from Giorgini's former studio in Indiana have been used to tell the story of this digital pioneer. The book explores the artist's life as a professor of civil engineering at Purdue University as well as providing a catalog of his artistic contributions. Placing his work in the context of the wider development of computer art, the book also presents a valuable contribution to the history of the field. Giorgini's papers have been recently transferred to Purdue University's Virginia Kelly Karnes Archives and Special Collections Research Center, where they will be preserved and made accessible for future researchers of digital media art history. While complete in itself, this book also plays an important role in contextualizing and providing an access point for that collection.
