The purpose of this study is to advance the understanding of how women are portrayed in magazine advertisements by employing interval measurements to the standard content analysis techniques and providing a comparison between the advertisements and actual trends of the female population in the United States. Although this study is a content analysis, the different constructs measured by unipolar, seven-point scales provided a more detailed account of the depiction of women in advertising. The account of the depiction was more detailed because stereotypes are often used as a basis for classification, yet stereotypes fail to measure less dominant features of character portrayal. Significant findings reveal a change in the direction advertising has been moving. Other role portrayal studies have used content analysis as a method for examining the depiction of women in advertising, but these studies failed to create a method for measuring several aspects within an advertisement. This study not only analyzed the most dominant characteristic of the portrayals of women in each advertisement; several characteristics of the advertisement were measured in an attempt to reflect more accurate stereotypes.

In contemporary society advertising is everywhere. Advertisement is always with us, no matter where we are. Although we are aware of the constant bombarding by advertisement everywhere we go, we hardly recognize the influence that it has on us. Thereby, advertising has a great influence on us as individuals and on society as a whole. Through the media, we make sense of our cultural identities, gender and sexuality. The central goal of this book is to examine the development of presentations of gender stereotypes in print advertisements over a time period of 40 years via content analysis of a sample of magazine advertisements. The key questions are: How do U.S. print advertisements construct gender stereotypes? How did these stereotypes develop and do they have an influence on the consumer and the U.S. culture? Content analysis has been proven in decades of research on gender stereotyping as it relates to mass media and because this is an appropriate method to not only focus on images, but also on verbal messages. Magazines present an especially enduring, popular medium, thus this study focuses on gender stereotypes in print advertisements of magazines. More specifically, it focuses on the magazines Cosmopolitan and Esquire due to the varying target audiences, and because they might be a potential indicator of U.S. magazine advertising in general. To further limit the object of investigation, this study concentrates on beauty product advertisements. From the text: - Gender studies; - Cosmopolitan; - Esquire; - Identity; - U.S. Magazines

"Commercializing Women is a collection of original essays intended to stimulate discussion about the depictions of women in Asian media. The authors explain how the underlying philosophical and cultural contexts that shape the life experiences of women in Asia are reflected in the media portrayals, especially in advertising. They discuss the influence of Confucianism in China, Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore; the traditional Hindu beliefs that have shaped life for women in India; and finally the role of Islam in constructing social norms for women in Islamic countries like Pakistan. Together these traditional influences along with the new and emerging global cultural values inherent in the media, weave a set of conditions that create the context for images of women in Asian media. Through a sampling of countries in Asia, the authors are able to explore and compare the underlying issues that affect the commercial representation of women in the region." "By drawing on a range of methodologies this book provides scholars with an understanding of the representation of women in advertising from the point of view of message producers who view Asian women as a growing market for clothing and beauty products, as well as from the point of view of many Asian women who see these commercial messages as tools for either subjugation or empowerment."--BOOK JACKET.

Recent research on magazine advertisements, for the most part, has examined race in terms of representation and gender in terms of stereotypical social roles and objectification. Very few content analyses have been done regarding the depictions of women in terms of specific body types portrayed in the advertising content of women's and teen magazines. In addition, very few, if any, studies have examined women's and teen's magazine advertisements for the presence of gender and racial stereotypes, overt sexuality, and depictions of a body ideal. This content analysis of six mainstream women's magazines explores the existence of all those variables and puts them in context with one another, examining the implications for what these advertisements say about our society. Specifically, this study focuses on the portrayals of women in women's and teen magazines, where previous studies have examined portrayals of women in general magazines or men's magazines, but no focus has been put on teen magazines or specifically women's magazines. Major findings include the obvious suggestions of specific body ideals for women and teens of different racial backgrounds, perpetuation of social role expectations and social stereotypes, and lack of sexual imagery prevalence in women's and teen magazines.

This thoroughly revised second edition provides a critical overview of the contemporary debates and discussions surrounding gender and mediated communication. The book is divided into three parts: representing, producing, and consuming, with each section made up of three chapters. The first chapter of each section attempts to answer the most basic questions: ‘Who is represented?’, ‘Who produces what?’, and ‘Who consumes what?’. The second chapter of each section draws attention to the complexity of the relationship between gender and media, concentrating on the 'why'. The third and final chapter of each section addresses the latest debates in the fields of media and gender, adding a vital layer of understanding of the topic at hand. Throughout, text boxes provide additional information on the most important concepts and topics, and exercises help bridge the gap between theory and everyday life media practices. The second edition has been updated in light of current developments with regard to gender, media technologies, and globalisation, including recent theoretical insights and examples. This is an ideal textbook for students studying gender and media, and for general courses on gender studies, sociology, cultural studies, and women’s studies.
