Hey y'all! Welcome to my first book! Inside you will find a collection of recipes from my family's yearly Cookie "Day" tradition. Did you notice those quote marks? Yeah, that's because Cookie Day tends to happen over multiple days. It all started when a five year old little red headed girl asked her Nana if they could make cookies for the neighbors on our tiny little dirt road. Folks, my Nana was just the best person. When it came to children and encouraging creativity and goodness, she was so on it. So, a new family tradition was born. The tradition has grown exponentially over the years. Our family has grown up and had a lot more children, even a grandson for me! On top of that, did I mention that my Nana was amazing? Because she was. Nana loved everybody and love shined through her and right into the very center of every heart she ever focused it on. So our family didn't just grow, it gathered. Our Nana reached out and loved and brought every wandering soul that needed it right on into our family. My family reaches far and wide and encompasses folks I haven't even met yet. I am so lucky. So our little tradition grew, and it grew, and then it grew some more until Cookie Day was more like cookie week! I remember my sister and I both getting sent off to take naps when we were young mothers and obviously exhausted and cranky. The other ladies kept an eye on the kiddos. You see, Cookie Day has never really been about cookies for all of us. This is a tradition that brings our family together in love and support while we show our neighbors that we care about them through this exceptionally enjoyable and yummy act of service. There's just something especially healing about being surrounded by people that love you while you work together to show other people that you do, in fact, love them too. So I hope you enjoy these recipes. Please, make them with someone you love. Invite that lady down the street that always looks so lonely. Ask that tired mom if she'd like to bring the kids to help decorate. Trust me, she would love to keep the kids happy and spend some time with other adults. And hey, if you mess something up; My mom is absolutely convinced that all cookie plates ought to have a "bad cookie." Sometimes we battle her to toss out a burned batch, sometimes we just put the dern cookie on the plates no matter what it looks like. She is hilarious and can be infuriatingly stubborn when she's in the right mood! I really hope I get accused of being just like her one of these days. So anyway, just know that we burn our cookies sometimes too! It's gonna be ok. Promise.

Millions of people worldwide are affected by neurological disorders which disrupt the connections within the brain and between brain and body causing impairments of primary functions and paralysis. Such a number is likely to increase in the next years and current assistive technology is yet limited. A possible response to such disabilities, offered by the neuroscience community, is given by Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMIs) and neuroprostheses. The latter field of research is highly multidisciplinary, since it involves very different and disperse scientific communities, making it fundamental to create connections and to join research efforts. Indeed, the design and development of neuroprosthetic devices span/involve different research topics such as: interfacing of neural systems at different levels of architectural complexity (from in vitro neuronal ensembles to human brain), bio-artificial interfaces for stimulation (e.g. micro-stimulation, DBS: Deep Brain Stimulation) and recording (e.g. EMG: Electromyography, EEG: Electroencephalography, LFP: Local Field Potential), innovative signal processing tools for coding and decoding of neural activity, biomimetic artificial Spiking Neural Networks (SNN) and neural network modeling. In order to develop functional communication with the nervous system and to create a new generation of neuroprostheses, the study of closed-loop systems is mandatory. It has been widely recognized that closed-loop neuroprosthetic systems achieve more favorable outcomes for users then equivalent open-loop devices. Improvements in task performance, usability, and embodiment have all been reported in systems utilizing some form of feedback. The bi-directional communication between living neurons and artificial devices is the main final goal of those studies. However, closed-loop systems are still uncommon in the literature, mostly due to requirement of multidisciplinary effort. Therefore, through eBook on closed-loop systems for next-generation neuroprostheses, we encourage an active discussion among neurobiologists, electrophysiologists, bioengineers, computational neuroscientists and neuromorphic engineers. Once Joseph Stalin took the lead of the Soviet Bolshevists after the death of Vladimir Lenin, he quickly turned away from Lenin’s New Economic Policy, with its many concessions to capitalism, to a policy of one-country socialism, driven by his first Five Year Plan (1928) and a plan that other Bolsheviks like Lenin and Trotsky thought impossible. That shift, radical, forced Stalin to “urbanize” the USSR’s vast rural areas—that is, to impose a factory-like model on the Soviet countryside to maximize its efficiency. That required collectivizing the numerous Soviet farms—making large farms of the numerous small farms. Ukraine was to be the model republic due to its vastness and black, fertile lands. Not only were the republics to be collectivized, they were also to be Russified for the sake of model efficiency and centralization of control. And so, while Stalin, early in his political life, preached respect for the cultural diversity of its many republics and the right of secession of any republic, the need to collectivize the Soviet farms for the sake of one-country socialism demanded compliance. Ukrainian peasant-farmers were non-compliant, for they readily saw that the State was asking them for everything and giving back nothing but the pledge of efficient farms to benefit the State, and non-compliance forced Stalin’s authoritarian hand. He imposed laws that brutally punished non-compliant peasants, called “kulaks.” The plan was dekulakization. The intransigents were dispossessed of their property, alienated from other villagers, exiled, and exterminated. The result in Ukraine was the gross inefficiency of both collective and individual farms. That led to intolerance of Ukrainian culture and theft of Ukrainian grain, and even all other findable foodstuffs, to punish Ukrainians. The end was a great famine in 1932 and 1933 in which some four million Ukrainians died. Did Stalin believe that he could urbanize the Soviet countryside? Did Stalin think that socialism could take root in the backwater Soviet Union without the aid of Western succor? Did Stalin hate Ukrainians because many pressed for a cultural identity separate from that of Russia? Had Stalin’s plan of dekulakization from the beginning been a policy of political genocide? Those are some of the many questions I aim to answer in this book. I focus much on Stalin’s writings in the efforts to ascertain his mindset as a dictator.
