Es gibt zahlreiche deutsche Schriftstellerlexika, Künstlerlexika, Gelehrtenlexika. Ein Übersetzerlexikon hingegen gibt es bisher nicht. Dabei steht fest, dass unsere Kenntnisse der Literaturen der Welt größtenteils den Entdeckungen, ja sogar dem Lebenswerk zahlloser Übersetzer zu verdanken sind, von denen wir meist jedoch kaum mehr als den Namen kennen. Ob hinter diesen Namen vielleicht noch anderes zu entdecken wäre als die reichlich erforschte Sinnverdrehung und Wortklauberei – das u. a. sollen die hier versammelten translationswissenschaftlichen und literaturgeschichtlichen Studien zu Übersetzern aus unterschiedlichen Sprachen und Epochen exemplarisch erhellen. Diese Studien bilden zugleich den Grundstock für das derzeit entstehende digitale Germersheimer Übersetzerlexikon. Darüber hinaus befassen sich im vorliegenden Band mehrere interdisziplinär ausgerichtete Beiträge mit den für die Erstellung eines Übersetzerlexikons relevanten theoretischen, methodischen und forschungspraktischen Grundfragen.

Scientific and Technical Translation (STT) is a highly complex and knowledge-intensive field of translation and cognitive linguistics is a usage-based linguistic framework which provides powerful theoretical tools for modelling knowledge organisation and representation in discourse. This book explores the interface between scientific and technical translation studies and cognitive linguistics by discussing the epistemological, contextual, textual and cross-linguistic dimensions of scientific and technical translation from a cognitive linguistic perspective. Particular emphasis is placed on explicitation and implicitation as indicators of the interaction between text and context in STT. Karin Michaëlis (1872–1950) was one of the most important Danish authors of the early 20th century and achieved enormous international success with her Bibi books about the life and adventures of a free-spirited Danish girl named Bibi. The series was not particularly popular in the author’s native country, however. This book unravels the intricate reasons behind the strikingly asymmetrical reception of the Bibi series at home and abroad while at the same time deconstructing this homeabroad dichotomy by showing that the Bibi books are an example of transnational children’s literature. They did not have their “home” in Denmark in that Karin Michaëlis wrote them specifically for foreign publishers, first and foremost the German Herbert Stuffer. The book further argues that the Danish texts are rewritings rather than originals and explores some of the salient textual features of the Danish and German Bibi books. Finally, it examines the series’ reception by young Italian readers in Fascist Italy and Karin Michaëlis’ Italian translator.
