Der gegenwärtige Kenntnisstand umfasst neben der Definition von Trends und der Vorstellung aktueller Trends in der Fitnessbranche, die Definition von Functional Training, Erläuterungen der verschiedenen Trainingsformen in diesem Bereich auch die Aussagen einiger Experten zum Potenzial des Trends. Um Ideen und Anregungen zu sammeln, wie ein Functional-Trainingskozept aussehen könnte, wurde ein Benchmarking durchgeführt und die Konzepte der vier Unternehmen Fitness First, McFIT, High5 und FitnessGym Freiburg betrachtet. Aufbauend auf dem gegenwärtigen Kenntnisstand und den Ergebnissen des Benchmarkings wurden 32 Mitgliedern und 32 Nichtmitgliedern nach ihren Wünschen und Einstellungen zum Training mittels Fragebogen schriftlich befragt. Es galt die Fragen zu klären, ob bei den Mitgliedern und potenziellen Kunden Interesse bzw. Bedarf an Functional Training gegeben ist, was sich die Kunden/ potenziellen Kunden wünschen, welches Konzept geeignet ist und welche Zielgruppe durch die Trainingsform besonders angesprochen wird. Die Ergebnisse konnten zeigen, dass Interesse an Functional Training in allen Altersklassen gegeben ist. Das gewünschte Konzept beinhaltet Kleingruppen und selbstständiges Training angeleitet durch gut ausgebildete Trainer mit hochwertiger Betreuung, wobei das Training moderat bis anstrengend gestaltet ist. Sowohl das Training draußen in der Natur als auch drinnen ist gefragt. Die Investitionsbereitschaft der Befragten liegt bei möglichst geringem Aufwand.
