In dem vorliegenden Band wird eine Konzeption für die Schulbuchforschung vorgestellt, die es ermöglicht, die Bedeutung des Schulbuches im historischen Kontext zu erschließen. Hierbei werden insbesondere das Konzept der "Grammar of Schooling" (Tyack, Tobin, Cuban), Ansätze pädagogischer Innovationsforschung sowie diskursanalytische Perspektiven daraufhin geprüft, inwieweit sie für die Schulbuchforschung fruchtbar gemacht werden können. Der methodische Ansatz wird anhand von vier Fallstudien verdeutlicht, in denen die Wechselwirkungen zwischen den bildungspolitischen Absichten und Steuerungsversuchen, den pädagogisch-didaktischen Innovationsbe-strebungen und den praktischen Erwartungshaltungen aufgezeigt werden. Zur Exemplifizierung des Ansatzes wurden vier exponierte Themenbereiche ausgewählt: -das Volksschullesebuch als Steuerungsinstrument in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts in Preußen, -die Schulbuchkritik der Herbartianer, -die Ideologisierung der Fibeln im Nationalsozialismus sowie -die Verbreitung politikdidaktischer Innovationen in Schulbüchern der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

This book explores the fascinating and complex interactions between the ways that culture and education operate within and across societies. In some cases, education is imagined as an integrated part of general cultural phenomena; in others, educational interventions become the means for transforming the cultural circumstances of different populations. The contributors to this volume show how certain educational practices produce new cultural and professional knowledge; discuss the impacts of initially foreign educational ideas and institutions on established cultural institutions in very different societies; and explore the impacts of modernity and modern educational ideas on more traditional gendered and religious practices and communities. The book also provided striking examples of when these impacts were not benign. Increasingly powerful twentieth-century governments attempted to use education and schools to produce new, reformed citizens suitable for their newly created colonial, national, socialist, and fascist states. The expectation was that cultural and social transformation might be engineered, in major part, through schooling. This book was originally published as a special issue of Paedagogica Historica.

Schulbücher haben innerhalb der Schule eine große Bedeutung für die Gestaltung des Unterrichts. Das Thema Subsahara-Afrika spielt sowohl in der hiesigen Gesellschaft als auch in Schulbüchern eine eher untergeordnete Rolle. Diese Erfahrung machte der aus Eritrea geflüchtete Autor in den 1980/90er Jahren als Lernender an einer Wuppertaler Gesamtschule. Im Rahmen seines Studiums der Sozialpädagogik stellte er fest, dass diese Problematik im universitären Kontext ebenfalls nur marginal behandelt wird. Auch außerhalb der Schule wird Subsahara-Afrika in der allgemeinen Medienberichterstattung als Krisen- und Katastrophenregion dargestellt, bei der insbesondere der Anteil europäischer bzw. westlicher Länder an dieser Situation weitgehend eine untergeordnete Rolle spielt und Initiativen aus Subsahara-Afrika zur Lösung von Problemen kaum Erwähnung finden.
