Reading in Context helps students acquire the vocabulary and reading skills they need to achieve academic success by teaching and reinforcing key concepts with engaging, contextualized readings. Each unit focuses on an academic reading skill, an academic discipline, and three readings that provide Canadian, academic, and professional context for the discipline in focus. Fifteen new words from the Academic Word List (AWL) are introduced in each unit and then recur throughout the text to helpstudents retain new vocabulary. The Critical Thinking and Synthesis section at the end of each unit allows students to evaluate how ideas are presented in the three readings, compare or apply ideas, and synthesize the information. A practical, student-friendly approach develops and supports specific reading skills * identifying main ideas and supporting details * recognizing comparisons and contrasts * summarizing and paraphrasing * interpreting graphs, tables, and maps * identifying cause-and-effect relationships * differentiating between facts and opinions* understanding details, time relationships * recognizing perspective and toneFeatures* Authentic, multi-disciplinary readings engage students with post-secondary subject matter from a wide-variety of authentic sources. * Canadian content develops students' knowledge of Canadian culture and perspectives on national and global issues.* Vocabulary from the Academic Word List is taught and reused throughout the text to help students learn, understand, and retain key academic vocabulary. * Critical thinking and synthesis activities reinforce essential academic skills.

Improving Learning In A Professional Context written by Jim McNally and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-09-28 with Education categories.

Improving Learning in a Professional Context provides vital new evidence on exactly how teachers learn to be teachers; evidence that is likely to affect and influence the profession for many years to come. Demonstrating that learning in schools is more than simple ‘cognitive’ knowledge of the curriculum and teaching skills, this book suggests that we need to pay more attention to the emotional, relational, ethical, material, structural and temporal dimensions of the teaching experience. Based on empirical research, including interviews with new teachers, by teachers themselves, on a scale rarely seen before, the book reveals the complexity of learning in a professional context and gives some basic truths about what really matters in teaching. This book offers a fundamental critique of policy but also the prospect of constructive change for the better as the authors present accounts of what the ‘real’ experience of beginning teaching may be like, as well as lines for future research. Key questions are answered, such as: Do we really understand what beginners go through in the workplace? What is the experience of new teachers as they join one of the largest workforces in the developed world? What do teachers learn in the school, one of our universal institutions? Becoming a teacher is a transformative search by individuals for their teaching identities and, with this book, teachers and teacher educators can at last begin to understand this complex developmental process. IMPROVING LEARNING SERIES The Improving Learning series supports evidence-informed professional practice and policy-making in education. Each book showcases findings from the Teaching and Learning Research Programme (TLRP) - one of the world’s largest coordinated educational research initiatives. For those with a commitment to the improvement of outcomes for learners, these books are essential reading.

Gunina and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-13 with Foreign Language Study categories.

This book is a result of the investigative attempts of linguistics professionals to identify and meet the challenges of developing communicative competence in future engineers, economists and other such specialists. The unifying feature of all the contributions brought together here is the active involvement of the authors in practical instruction of English for specific professional purposes at the tertiary (bachelors’ and masters’ programs) level in Russia. This volume covers a number of relevant areas in this field, including new developments in methodology, approaches to course and materials design, and the contribution of language theory to foreign language teaching in a professional context. The unique teaching approach advocated in this book denounces the traditional practice of transferring classical methodology of communicative-oriented teaching to language classes for students with a non-linguistic or non-teaching professional orientation. The underlying idea of this volume is that a change in professional context implies a change in language teaching methodology, including materials, techniques and target competences. The ideas and experiences analysed here will appeal to anyone interested in the current trends in foreign language teaching and learning and particularly to educationalists.

Politeness In Professional Contexts written by Dawn Archer and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-15 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Much like in everyday life, politeness is key to the smooth running of relationships and interactions. Professional contexts, however, tend to be characterised by a plethora of behaviours that may be specific to that context. They include ‘polite’ behaviours, ‘impolite’ behaviours and behaviours that arguably fall somewhere between – or outside – such concepts. The twelve chapters making up this edited collection explore these behaviours in a range of communication contexts representative of business, medical, legal and security settings. Between them, the contributions will help readers to theorize about – and in some cases operationalize (im)politeness and related behaviours for – these real-world settings. The authors take a broad, yet theoretically underpinned, definition of politeness and use it to help explain, analyse and inform professional interactions. They demonstrate the importance of understanding how interactions are negotiated and managed in professional settings. The edited collection has something to offer, therefore, to academics, professionals and practitioners alike.

This position paper contends that the whole language approach to reading instruction has been disproved by research and evaluation but still pervades textbooks for teachers, instructional materials for classroom use, some states' language-arts standards and other policy documents, teacher licensing requirements and preparation programs, and the professional context in which teachers work. The paper finds that many who pledge allegiance to "balanced reading" continue to misunderstand reading development and to deliver "poorly conceived, ineffective reading instruction." It argues that "rooting out whole language" from reading classrooms calls for effort on eight separate fronts. The paper describes what whole language is, why it is contradicted by scientific studies, how it continues in education, and what should be done to correct the situation. (Contains a glossary and 57 notes.) (NKA)

Academic Reading Circles is a teacher-resource book for a learner-centred reading skills approach. It explains and exemplifies an intensive reading approach aimed at improving learner engagement with and understanding of concepts in non-fiction texts, like those encountered in undergraduate courses. This approach combines individual investigation with collaborative construction of knowledge through group sharing and discussion. In the book, teachers are guided through an entire ARC cycle, including: *the initial introduction of ARC to learners; *the five ARC roles learners undertake when reading a text; *detailed examples of their use on a sample text; *solutions for groupings, assessment, and potential problem areas; and *downloadable activities to further facilitate ARC beyond this book. Academic Reading Circles is ideal for teacher use in pre-sessional or in-sessional EAP programs at the university level. Secondary and general ESL/EFL teachers may also benefit. The book is published with the round.
