Because surfaces and interfaces found in oxide systems are strikingly complex, they can only be fully understood when examined at an atomic level. Yet for the materials scientist, such understanding is of paramount importance since future technological advances require it. This book, the second in a new series from the Materials Research Society, addresses structure-property relationships in these systems. Compared to the first proceedings, here we see a shift towards less well-defined materials that often more closely resemble reality, and an increasing effort to study these phenomena using in situ techniques. Of particular interest are discussions on the dynamical evolution of surface structure and relationships between the structure of surfaces, their stoichiometry and the distribution of bulk dislocations, which in turn can control the growth and retraction of islands and pits. Modeling and characterization of thin intergranular films, with a focus on how these films influence the properties of so many ceramic materials, are also addressed.

Computer modeling has reached a new level of sophistication, where it can be used to predict the structure and energy of interfaces in oxides. Nowhere is this activity more important than in these ceramic materials, where more applications are being discovered but the fundamental properties are often poorly known or not known at all. As more multicomponent oxides are exploited for their novel properties, both the experimentalist and the modeler will be challenged to predict or explain the behavior of these materials under a wide range of conditions. This book focuses on the interfaces of oxide-based materials. The areas of composite materials, materials synthesis, microscopy, defect chemistry and structure, nanomaterials technologies, thin-film synthesis and characterization, computer modeling, structural characterization and properties measurement of surfaces and internal interfaces are featured together with advances in computer modeling of oxide interfaces. A series on structural characterization of surfaces and interfaces utilizing advanced microscopic techniques is also provided, as is a series on the measurement of properties of real interfaces (diffusion, mechanical, electrical and magnetic).

Handbook of Self-Cleaning Surfaces and Materials The first truly comprehensive work on this rapidly developing field in two volumes Self-cleaning surfaces are those that can be cleaned, for instance, by sun or rainwater, without human intervention. They are sometimes found in nature but developing man-made equivalents has been a major area of nanotechnology research in recent years. Self-cleaning tiles, glasses, paints, and textiles have been developed to date, and the number of applications for this technology is growing. Handbook of Self-Cleaning Surfaces and Materials provides a comprehensive overview of this field of study. It includes two volumes, with the first presenting the basic principles of the field and the second supplying specific examples and applications. It is a one-stop shop for anyone looking to familiarize themselves with this area of technological research, as well as for existing professionals who want a handy and thorough reference. Readers of the Handbook of Self-Cleaning Surfaces and Materials will also find: An editor and contributor team with decades of experience in both academic and industrial research Detailed treatment of subjects including TiO2 photocatalysis, hydrophobic self-cleaning surfaces, and more Figures throughout illustrating important concepts and chemical formulas Handbook of Self-Cleaning Surfaces and Materials is an essential resource for researchers and industry professionals in chemistry, surface physics, and materials science.

This book provides a forum for international and interdisciplinary discussion of phenomena where materials performance may be enhanced through engineered surfaces and interfaces. The materials science of hard and wear-resistant coatings, including nanostructured coatings, is a scientifically challenging problem with immediate technological applications in machine and machining tools, magnetic recording and other manufacturing industries. Hard coating systems designed for use in next-generation materials applications must achieve a combination of physical properties. The performance and reliability of MEMS devices strongly depend on the near-surface properties and many materials issues at the micro- and nanoscale remain to be resolved. This book reviews key aspects, discusses ongoing research and speculates on future trends. Topics include: nano- and micrometer-scale characterization and properties; synthesis and characterization of nanostructured materials; deposition, characterization and properties of films and coatings; industrial applications of surface engineering; atomistic and continuum modeling of materials properties; surface engineering issues for bio/microelectronics applications; and surface engineering issues in MEMS structures and devices.

This book contains the proceedings of two symposia held at the 2002 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston. Papers from Symposium T, Crystalline Oxides on Semiconductors, bring together experts from different technology areas - high-k gate dielectrics, novel memories, and ferroelectrics, for example - to examine commonality among the fields. These papers offer an overview of the field, highlight interesting experimental results and device ideas, and feature innovative theoretical approaches to understanding these systems. Symposium V, Interfacial Issues for Oxide-Based Electronics, covers a wide range of topics involving the interfaces between electro-optical oxide layers and other materials. Overall, it is clear that a new generation of materials and heterostructures has been enabled by the increasing control of interfacial phenomena. Topics include: epitaxial oxide-silicon heterostructures; ferroelectric thin films on silicon; theory and modeling; crystalline oxides for gate dielectrics; transparent conducting oxides; transparent conducting oxides and oxide growth and properties; field effect devices and gate dielectrics; ferroelectrics, capacitors and sensors; organic devices and interfacial growth issues.
