History Of Subtitles written by Ethan Parker and has been published by Publifye AS this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-02-26 with Performing Arts categories.
History of Subtitles explores the fascinating and often overlooked story of how subtitles and dubbing have shaped global cinema. Beyond mere translation, these linguistic tools have fostered cultural exchange and influenced how audiences engage with foreign films. Early silent films relied on intertitles to convey dialogue, a practice that evolved with technological advancements. The book highlights the tensions between artistic integrity and accessibility, examining how dubbing can alter a film's original intent to suit different cultural norms, while subtitling aims to bridge linguistic gaps without compromising the source material. The book progresses chronologically, tracing the evolution of subtitling from the intertitles of silent films to modern digital practices in the streaming era. It delves into the rise of global film markets in the mid-20th century, which spurred the development of efficient subtitling techniques. By drawing on archival materials, film reviews, and insights from translation studies, the book reveals how subtitles empower filmmakers to reach wider audiences and also reflect cultural and linguistic power dynamics, impacting language learning and intercultural understanding.

The Semiotics Of Subtitling written by Zoe De Linde and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-08 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
Subtitling serves two purposes: to translate the dialogue of foreign language films for secondary audiences (interlingual) and to transform the soundtrack of television programmes into written captions for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers (intralingual). While both practices have strong linguistic roots, often being compared to text translation and editing, this book reveals the complex influences arising from the audiovisual environment. Far from being simply a matter of linguistic equivalence, the authors show how the effectiveness of subtitles is crucially dependent upon the hidden semiotic relations between text and image; relations which affect the meaning of the visual-linguistic message and the way in which that message is ultimately received. Focusing primarily on intralingual subtitling, The Semiotics of Subtitling adopts a holistic approach, combining linguistic theory with empirical eye-movement analysis in order to explore the full depth of the medium and the reading behaviour of viewers.

A Relevance Theoretic Approach To Decision Making In Subtitling written by Łukasz Bogucki and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-13 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
This book aims to investigate the process of decision-making in subtitling of feature films and entertainment series. The author uses Relevance Theory (Sperber and Wilson,1986) to argue that the technical, linguistic and translational constraints at work in subtitling result in a curtailed target text, and illustrates this argument by invoking examples drawn from the English-Polish subtitles of films and television series available through the subscription service Netflix. After introducing the current state of research on audiovisual translation within and outside the framework of translation studies, he presents the core concepts underpinning Relevance Theory and explains how it can be used to construct a model of the process of subtitling. This book will be of interest to students and scholars working in the fields of translation studies, audiovisual translation studies, and communication studies.

This book examines three metafunction meanings in subtitle translation with three research foci, i.e., the main types of cross-modal interrelation, the primary function of semiotic interplay, and the key linguistic components influencing the subtitles. It goes beyond traditional textual analysis in translation studies; approaches subtitle translation from a multimodality standpoint; and breaks through the linguistic restraints on subtitling research by underscoring the role of semiotic interplay. In the field of multimodality, this book bridges subtitling and multimodality by investigating the interweaving relationships between different semiotic modes, and their corresponding impacts on subtitle translation.
